The Miami Dolphins signed former Carolina starting offensive guard Evan Mathis on Tuesday, perhaps a sign they're quite concerned about the left leg injury that had starting right guard Donald Thomas on crutches Monday.
Mathis started 15 games at right guard for Carolina in 2006, the last season current Dolphins offensive coordinator Dan Henning served as Carolina's offensive coordinator.
He played in only one game last season and was waived in the last round of training camp cuts this year. Carolina had taken him in the third round of the 2005 draft.

Wonder who they cut?

Boomer Grigsby, Thomas out for year?

Cramer replaced Grigsby at FB. I hope and doubt they put Thomas on IR so my guess is one of our back up OL.

I think Mathis has potential of being good for us. Well see.

Analysis

Evan Mathis has a great deal of starting experience on the offensive line. He redshirted the 2000 season before earning the starting right tackle spot in 2001. He started at right tackle for three seasons and was moved to left guard prior to his senior season. He has good size but may need to add some bulk. He has the frame in which to do so. He displays good technique as a run blocker and has the athleticism to get to the second level and take out a linebacker. He will struggle at times when matched up against some of the larger defensive tackles. He is an intelligent player who understands blocking schemes and uses angles to his advantage. He needs to improve his pass blocking but he has a great deal of potential with quick feet and long arms that help keep defenders away from his body. He has the mean streak you like to see in an offensive lineman and he almost always finishes his blocks. Evan had one of the best combine workouts among all offensive linemen with a 4.91 40 and 35 strength reps. He has been a player on the rise recently and could be selected as early as the second round on draft day.

I think Murphy needs a year on the bench, so he can bulk up and develope. Thomas was an awesome addition, I hope his injury is not serious. Mathis has played RG before in this league and I think he could help us. Plus he is familiar with the system. If Thomas is headed to IR then we wont have to cut anyone. Im thinking the safety from GB we picked up.

This regime needs to sign a vet WR, forget about Ginn. Cut Hagan, move Ginn to number 2 and keep Bess to the slot. Move Camarillo to 4th and use Wilford in Red zone Situations.

But can he be a starting RG? There's a reason he's on the waiver wire so I'm going to hope for the best but experience tells me that there's a good chance he won't be on this team in a few weeks.

That's devastating about Thomas. I just found out late tonight after sampling this site. Weird, because I taped the game and watched some of it on replay Sunday night. I didn't notice an issue with Thomas.

I don't know much about Mathis other than remembering his name. As always, I'd caution against expecting too much from someone else's reject. Years ago I used to look up everything I could find about the new hires, after an injury. Now I assign them as mediocre or worse, and it seldom disappoints.
