Merged: Good read on Gholston's limitations, Hardy, Porter, and others

Vernon Gholston's Pro Day(Other than OSU Point of View)

NFL personnel arrived at the Ohio State Pro Day excited about how DE Vernon Gholston would work out. He no doubt looks the part: very muscular and defined. Gholston impressed many when he ran his 40 on field turf instead of Ohio State's notoriously fast track, timing a 4.63 and a 4.65. Then jumped a 37-38 inch vertical; anyone who reports he jumped 42 inches has bad sources as the testing unit was slightly broken during his jump. Once on the field, though, Gholston was not nearly as impressive. He is so muscle-bound and big that he struggled to bend knees and sink hips, which hindered his ability to change directions in drills. Gholston was not the only one to work out. OT Kirk Barton ran a good 40 on the fast track (in the 4.98 range depending on the scout). However, he was not impressive in drills and did not make anyone think he is a better athlete than he showed during games.

Good points, people have fallen in love with his measurables but it's the position drills that scouts look most at.

I wish Chris Long worked out at LB during the combine - because even in spite of VG's numbers all indications were that Long ate his lunch and mid-day snack.

This is similar to the things people were saying about Gholston at the combine after he ran the short shuttle and 3-cone drills, so this is nothing new.

That to me is the biggest red flag. The ability to change directions is the key for me. It tells me he can't pass defend very well and probably doesn't avoid/disengage from blockers well unless he just uses his brute strength. Chris Long looked very fluid during the combine and the thing is he looked somewhat slim. It looks like he can carry more weight on his frame. Ghol looks like he is max out. To me Chris Long or Jake Long would make more sense than Ghol with the preference to Chris. All my life, the Dolphins had players you root for from Dan-Zach-JT. Chris would be the next guy in line and would make a hike of a representative.

Well Virginia...we root for all Dolphin players...not just one.

The rising draft stock of Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston ascended to another level this week as he impressed NFL scouts with yet another stellar workout. The Buckeyes star improved upon his scouting combine numbers by running a consensus 4.58 in the 40-yard dash, nearly a half-second faster than his times last month in Indianapolis. He also set a personal best with a 42-inch vertical leap. The Detroit native is regarded as a virtual lock to be selected in the top 10 picks in April’s draft. If available, he’s a player that the Baltimore Ravens would consider for the eighth overall pick of the first round. Gholston has scheduled private workouts for the Miami Dolphins, who own the first overall pick of the draft, and the New York Jets, who pick sixth, on Monday. At the scouting combine, Gholston bench pressed 225 pounds 37 times. “I’ve been working, constantly trying to get better,†Gholston told Ohio reporters. “A lot of people said I did well at the combine, but I came back here and got right back to work on my drills. “As long as you’re working, you expect good things to happen. I’m one of those people that when I get into something, I’m fully into it and I’m not holding back.†- Aaron Wilson, Carroll County Times

My bad, I was just trying to say that Chris Long would be a worthy sucessor to players such as Dan Marino, Zach Thomas, JT.

Agreed...thats why you have to take all things with a grain of salt. All Pro-days are hand timed...the combine is done but electronic means. Which do you trust.

Gholston is human after all.

Sounds like he is strictly a 4-3 DE.

Honestly if the Rams pass on him he is either a Raider or he drops out of top 5.

Well that atleast clears up who we might draft.
