I'm apparently in one of the areas getting hit the worst. The turnpike is blocked at Bird Road, SW 40th Street, near my parents' home due to a fallen large street sign. The power is out here, along with 1,000,000+ others in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties according to a Florida Power and Light spokeperson I heard in the radio. They can't try to reconnect until the gusts are 30 MPH or less.
The latest news is a major flyover bridge near the airport has an 18 wheeler toppled on it, very close to the edge, and the tractor trailor is is danger of plummeting 200 feet onto another road if another strong gust hits it. I think they said it was on the Dolphin Expressway section. The flyover has been closed. I'm sure it will make nationwide TV. A radio reporter said the image of the truck on the brink of falling is startling. Another flyover under construction at NW 36st Street has collapsed.
The winds and rain have shifted dramatically here. But still as strong. That really puts a strain on trees and structures, having to endure gusts from varying directions. You're only as strong as the weakest link.
A minor annoyance, but it stinks these hurricanes hit during summer months. The lack of AC is getting to me already.
