Apparently Jake really may be our guy, but if he doesnt accept a contract before whatever deadline Parcells has set, he may be someone elses guy. The tuna is going to have a hard time convincing someone to take less that Russell's contract from last year, but if anyone can do it ... it's the TUNA!

I don't see it as a problem as you do....first QB's always get paid more than other players...secondly...Every player wants to be known as the first selection in the draft...and thirdly....we may have an edge...Jumbo Elliot...who also played for Parcells...is also a player that came from Michigan and has been talking to J. Long.

All good points. Theres also the matter that if they don't accept the contract, they will get picked lower and get paid less than anything the Dolphins are offering.

Jake Long[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]...Peter King of SI.com is reporting the Miami Dolphins are negotiating with one player right now, Michigan OT Jake Long...there reportedly is a deadline for Long to agree to a deal, or Parcells and the Dolphins will move on to the next prospect on his list, which appears to be Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston. But his stock is supposedly dropping....

I think Jake will sign for less. it is still alot of $. The owners want to get the amount of $ put up for rookies down anyways. And the meetings on the new deal will start soon so...

I definitely think this is good for us and Jake. The only one its not good for is his agent, so if Jake sits down and actually takes a full look at this he should see it too.

I will strongly question the intelligence of our front office if this is not a smoke screen. I mean, if this is the guy you really want, why would you tell him that? It makes no sense. You need him to think you would easily consider someone else.

It just makes no sense.

I for the most part would agree with that.

Because he may be the guy on top the list...but he may not be the only guy...and the clock is ticking...next is Gholston...so the pressure is on J. Long.

Let me also add...the pressure is also on C. Long and Gholston too and here's why....lets say that the top three all say we want more money...then Parcells could say...let see what I can get Albert to sign for...while Albert is a reach at Tackle...he's the best guard in this draft...and the Dolphins have a large need for a guard...so they offer Albert the same deal as the others...does anyone think that a player who's not going to be drafted any higher than 5th...won't say Yes?

I think you might do it if you were sure of who you wanted first, and positively wanted a deal done before the draft.

I would think it could be difficult to get any prospect to accept a lower deal than last years #1 unless the prospect knew for sure they weren't being used, and that if they accepted it, that it was in fact a deal, or at a minimum that barring a trade down of the pick that they are the pick and that it is a deal.

I just don't see where that puts anywhere near the amount of pressure on Long that negotiating with two guys at the same time would. That is all I am saying.

That is my point. This type of negotiation tactic works the best when the guy you want is the guy you plan on going after later.

And by the way, Branden Albert is the guy I would be conducting this elaborate smokescreen to get. He will be the best tackle in this draft within no longer than one year's time.

Personally, I think that when a player realizes this is when all your leverage goes out the window. Given that, I think it is fair to say I disagree.

You never go after a player because of potential in the first three rounds....you go after the player that proved on the field with production...I thought most of us learned that lesson. Albert is a guard...the best guard in this draft..and thats what you should be looking for. If he proves on the field later that he can also play Tackle...you have gotten a bonus.

I actually completely disagree. The pressure is squarely on Jake Long. The first pick will set the pay scale for the rest of the draft. There is no question that Long will make less as the second pick. So he gets more money and the distinction of being the first overall pick. It absolute freaking genius I tell you!
