Merged: John Beck Highlights

There should be a merge on all the Beck threads and videos out there. But the boards are humming right now.

As I've been researching other scouting reports it's amazing at how fast he throws the ball and his quick release.

From March 16, 2007 (Wade Peery):
"He recorded the 2nd highest velocity of any quarterback at the 2007 combine, whistling the pigskin at 61.1 miles per hour."

"His wrists must be made of iron, because he flicks the ball effortlessly across the field, placing it right where it should be, where only the receiver can make a play with the ball."

I recall reading that Brett Favre throws at 60 mph (about 94 mph in baseball terms). His rookie year he could throw near 100 mph fastball (Chris Havel; Packersnews.com).

"Beck started throwing spirals when he was only 2.Every spring, BYU's baseball coaches beg him to try out for the team. They covet his 92 mph fastball. He's jammed the fingers of dozens of BYU receivers with his velocity and has worked to slow down his hips and even drag his trail leg to take heat off his passes http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,650197129,00.html

The one thing those videos show is that he is poised under hostile fire. He will take a big shot on the chin in order to deliver a knockout blow to a defense. Due to that willingness he will become a leader that the players will rally around without hesitation!

If you actually take the time to watch the videos posted you will see that John Beck has a below average arm for the NFL. The video titled 70 yard throw actually shows him throwing the ball 63 yards. He gets a running start and throws the ball as far as he can and it goes 63 yards. This is doen in the high altitude of Utah mind you. Notice the fact that thre is an arc on all of his throws, even the shorter ones. Beck will never get to throw from a running start while he is in the pocket.

At the end of the day, BEck's armstrength is good enough to be an NFL QB, much like JEff GArcia, Ty Detmer, Koy Detmer and Drew Brees, but he does have a below average NFL arm.

Instead of these constant posts trying to show that he has this great gun or comparisons to Favre, how about we focus on the things he does do well. BEck is an extremely accurate passer. HE doesn't have to take something off of his throws to maintain his accuracy, that's a seldom mentioned asset. Beck has good escapability and a very quick release (it's just a little low though), both of these assets help for making plays when there is nothing there and avoidding sacks. Let's hope he turns out to be the second coming of Drew Brees, QB is clearly the Dolphins biggest need (by far), but a strong armed gunslinger is not what we are getting in John Beck.

Beck is going to bee waaaay better than Quinn. Quinn was just hyped up.

hes very mobile in the pocket and can scramble very well so he can escape the rush well.

Beck shows some really nice throwing motion in this video of BYU vs. Notre Dame. Interesting ... a John Beck vs. Brady Quinn matchup. BYU usually has a better team than people think.

Check out how Beck has a nice snap of his wrist and how he uses his whole body in this throw at the 01:03 mark here.

Having a good throwing motion is a bit like having a good golf swing. Beck's showing a little Tiger Woods style technique there. Let's hope he can do that at the NFL level where everything is going crazy fast like a video game where you're playing at level 10 or whatever. The NFL is a whole different ballgame. Beck is going to be pretty surprised at the speed of the game. Almost every rookie says the same exact thing ... especially QBs. Beck has some really good coaches to get him ready for all this NFL madness. He should be glad about that part. He better work his butt off on every aspect of his game if he wants to have a good career in the NFL. It's a full time, year round job.

yeah he definitely has an arm and seems to always put the ball right on the money for his receivers. that cannon is gonna be very useful in stretching the field, especially with ted ginn. he's pretty old for a rookie though, 25.
