Merged: Mooch Fired?/Lions fire Mooch!

Wow. I didnt think this would happen till the end of the season. I couldnt beleive it though when I heard the Thanksgiving anouncers talking about how the coaches were still trying to teach the team the right way to practice. You are overhalf way through the season and you are still trying to teach you players to practice with the right attitude?!?!?!?!!? I think the mooch was just never a good fit for this team.

The point is they have so many other needs to deal with. You don't take a WR with 3 straight top 10 picks. One? Of course. Two? Possibly. Three? No way.
well i remember watching last years draft. they were sitting there, and williams fell to them. many thaught of him as a top 5 pick last season, and a top 5 pick this season.

Rodgers has had 2 major injuries in the past 2 seasons. and we now find out that he also had a drug problem. they obviously didnt think he was going to work out there.

they had a chance to take a very tallented young WR and did. they could have used a player at another position, but they chose the best player left on the board.

the lions drafting a WR last year was a good call, knowing what we know now.

a great coach who gets fired because of player's inabilities to play good...great job millen stick to tv

you also have to realize the players did not respect him.

The Mooch is CUT LOOSE!

Yahoo sports reports Mariucci is canned in Detroit

Good, one more overrated "genius" gone

Millen needs to go. He basically blamed Mooch for not developing all the great talent he drafted. Passed the buck basically, he couldnt have actually drafted duds right? Millen had no credentials for the job he has other than being on TV and being an explayer. He was fined for bypassing the leagues minority hiring/interviewing policy when he hired Mooch. He has presided over the worst tenure in Lions history-which is saying alot. He might as well pull his draft picks out of a hat.
Weird thing is I dont think he and Mooch have ever been on the same page, I dont think Millen was drafting the players to fit Mooch's system and I dont think they agreed on style of play or practices, etc. Millen is an idiot, the only good thing about him being in his job is that it keeps him off the TV.

Blessing in disguise for Mooch. Millen is an idiot who doesn't seem to be accountable to anyone.

Exactly.

The guy has gone through 2 head coaches....THAT HE HIRED in 4 years. His "great young talent" continues to under perform and they have a terrible offensive line, that he built.

Yet he gets a contract extension and continues to fire coaches?

I beginning to think he knows some Ford family secrects that are keeping him employed.

Ready, Aim.......Fire (Mooch)
But who is really to blame for the Lions failings?

So there we have it, the first canning of the season. Steve Mariucci was give the boot by the Lions earlier today after days of speculation since the Lions were embarrassed on Thanksgiving Day by the Atlanta Falcons.

The interesting thing about this move is how blame is apportioned. Fans and media alike are discussing not only Mooch's failings, but that of Lions GM Matt Millen and Lions Owner William Clay Ford.

Lets jump back a bit and look at the bigger picture. Ford has being involved with the Lions since 1956 and has owned the team outright since 1964. In that time, the Lions have only ever won one play-off game and they have only qualified for the play-offs nine times. Five years ago, Ford talked former NFL linebacker and then colour commentator Matt Millen into becoming the teams new General Manager despite no real experience in a Front Office role. Over the five years Millen has been GM of this team, the Lions have posted a record of 20-55.

Terrible offensive line? It's not Millen's fault at all. That line actually has more talent than our line does even, it's just that team is terribly coached. If you haven't noticed their best players are at positions that require little coaching.

The only way they are going to be able to get a quality coach is to fire Millen and get a new GM. No coach with a decent resume is going to go to Detroit, its like signing up to stand infront of a firing squad. Millen's Lions have the worst record in the NFL since he took over and he has fired I believe 3 coaches. I think this team was within a game or 2 of making the playoffs when he took over.
