So anyone think if we were going get a new OLB there would be consideration of Moving Roth to a ILB for depth on running/blitzing situations? I know he wouldnt fit the typical mold but neither did Zack. Not to mention, hes got a great motor and can hit hard.

On that note, we're in a position to take on players for one position, and allow us to move talent to positions better suited for that player. example: draft/pick up a larger center and move satele to guard away from the bigger NTs, providing quality depth beind thomas and smiley (as well as freeing up some roster room by getting rid of the less talented guards)
also picking up a OLB will let wake get rotation behind porter so he can groom and spell the OLD TIMER, who wont keep this pace much longer. and picking up another safety will let bell to move around a little more in multiple db packages and take advantage of his explosiveness.

Let me know what ya think about the roth idea, and guys you think might do better in other positions/situations...

I don't think its a good idea, Zach's phenomenal smarts for the game and the ability to use every ounce of physical talent he had made up for him not being your protypical MLB. Roth on the other hand really, is just good at stuffing the run and forcing the runners inside, but he'll be on the inside so he can't do that. I don't think that just run stuffing ability is going to work out so well at inside, we haven't tried him there yet, but as far as I can see he doesen't have an extreme talent like Zach did to make up for not being your common inside/middle LB

This is all true, but i wouldnt want to put him in there to be zack, just depth for run stuffing.... I dont think he has the smarts, or ability as zack, but he can sniff out the run and stand some people up.... maybe short yardage situations, or on stronger running teams... just rotational...

Could Matt Roth be moved to be our ILB ?

Hello,

Roth had a good season IMO but we need more pass rush from our second OLB with porter on the other side, we need a tackling machine inside along crowder, could rtoh be moved ILB on your opinion ?

This guy is a non stop motor, he tackle very correctly IMO and his height and weight could be very solid inside, and we could use him for bliztz from inside too.

Opinion ?

i would rather not for a variety of reasons....

SPEED
taking propper angles
natural instincts and reads (while shedding)
dropping into coverage

its a very tough position to convert into... A LOT harder than OLB, especially when you are already in the professional level.

Roth certainly can play inside

Great thread, Roth would be a monster on the inside IMO, since hes a good run stopper and wont get pushed back, lets let the the more athletic guys play OLB, Porter/Wake/Anderson and a draft pick.

Roth and Crowder/FA/DraftPick would be good together on the inside.

The more i look at our roster the more i get exited, im convinced that were not very far away from Super Bowl contention.

It is possible that we can fill ALL of our major holes THIS offseason, weve got all of free agency and 9 draft picks and who knows what kind of trades BP and Co will pull off.

Our QB situation looks better than it has since the Marino era.

I predict 12-4 in 2009 and a repeat as AFC east champs and a possible 1st round bye.

Roth at ILB

Great thread, i think Roth would make an excellent ILB because of his good run stopping and strength, plus we need more pass rushing ability from our OLB's and Roth is limited in that area.

I think to play inside you would have to be intellegent enough to run the defense and what I have heard during a V Holiday interview seems to point towards Roth being how shall we say
"not to bright" I would prefer someone with the football smarts of a Zach Thomas(not possible)but I know Roth doesn't have Zach's football IQ ...so to move Roth inside ...I don't think so

only time I can see Roth lining up ILB is 3rd-1 type situations when were expecting the run up the middle or whenever the inside run is obvious. he definitely has his place in our defense, it just isn't in the starting lineup.

Not only that, but Roth has never played ILB before. Since his contract is up and he is a free agent, it is too late for us to experiment with him on the inside.

ROTH CAN BAREly make it at a mediocre level int he outside. what makes u think he can play inside any better. besides he doesnt have speed. and lacks the big hit, strip the ball kinda skills. IMO.
