Reggie Howard's struggles might have diminished, but it might have come too late.

The Dolphins had been using Howard as a starting cornerback when Sam Madison missed the New Orleans game, but Madison's return did not mean Howard returned to his slot cornerback spot in Miami's nickel (five defensive backs) package.

That job has been taken by Kiwaukee Thomas. Howard isn't even practicing with the team's No. 1 dime (six defensive backs) package. Thomas and safety Yeremiah Bell are ahead of him there.

Saban has said Thomas has shown good instincts in the slot corner spot while Howard has admitted he is more comfortable not playing in the slot.

I find it kinda funny that Howard turned the FO down when they asked him to restructure his contract. He must have known he wouldn't be making much more money after his Dolphin days.

How come Saban doesn't use the same lack of production reason to bench Frerotte? Awfully inconsistent isn't he?
