Merged: Perspective on Dolphins’ “aging†defense is flawed

Not bad at all. Get a few more young guys in there via draft/free agency and we'll be even younger overall. If we continue to get guys like Crowder, Daniels, and Roth, I feel we'll be solid for a good number of years

I would love to see the phins pick up a killer safety on day 1.

And Vickerson wasn't even mentioned, who he was getting high praise from the vets during camp before he got hurt. Mitchell might be a surprise as well. I never got the aging defense thing either, yes we have a lot of older vets but we drafted what 5 defensive players with 2 starting (Daniels, Crowder) and the other three looking like they are being well groomed and to potentially be really solid (Roth, Wright, Vickerson). Pope looks decent and hopefully Poole and Mitchell will pan out. This looks like a young defense ready to rotate and step in as ready/necessary.

Good read. I agree with him. Our aging defense isn't really that old. They are also relatively healthy in terms of how often, (or severely) they have been injured in their careers. Typically, DEs have pretty long careers because they don't take the pounding that interior lineman tend to take play in and play out. Taylor is not old. He is, in my opinion, in his prime. Take Michael Strahan for example. He is 34 and still plays at a high level and has endured more nagging injuries than JT has. ZTs shoulders are probably a pain for him, but that would go for any LB. The biggest thing Zach has been able to avoid is a serious bout with concussions and he has yet to have any severe injuries to slow him down or make him miss any significant time or have to endure a huge amount of physcial therapy to get back to football shape over and over. His body has stayed pretty healthy. Holliday and Carter are fairly young and fresh. And our secondary has to be overhauled anyway. So we're looking pretty good to me, especially since we know Saban will continue to inject youth into our team every year to groom and be ready to step in.

Another thing to consider is this "aging defense" has only 5 players older than 29 signed beyond 2006 (Taylor, Thomas, Madison, Carter, Howard). All of these players on defense are in the last year of their contract in 2006 will be at least 29 next year: Zgonina, Holliday, Traylor, Bowens, Spragnan, Seau, Tebucky & Tillman. No doubt about it, the defense will be getting younger over the next couple years as these contracts expire or players get cut (Howard!).

Saban set things up very well because he has veterans schooling younger players in every aspect of the defense. The young defensive linemen are learning from some great players. Crowder is getting to learn from two perennial HOFers. Daniels, and the young secondary will that much better for having played with Sam Madison who played his position at a high level for a long time.

My sentiments exactly. For the NFL there is some age on this team but it is a nice blend of youth and experience. If Mueller drafts some gems in the later rounds then bring on the fresh talent to mesh with the new guys from this year and the vets. Keep in mind when it comes to re-building the secondary Saban is an excellent talent evaluator when it comes to DBs and loves to teach technique to young players. He should definitely have input come draft time in assisting Mueller in selecting the right young talent for the secondary as well as properly assessing the real value of available FA at corner and safety as options.
