I like everything Saban has done up until today.

yeah im not crazy about the picks thus far. i dont doubt ronnie brown, but i would rather have traded down even if it meant taking less for the #2.

DE from Iowa, not that big and not that great of a pass rusher but is considered a relentless, active type of player. I would call him a David Pollack with less pass rushing ability. This pick doesn't blow me away but again I am willing to believe in Saban until he gives me reason not to.

That would be my exact summation, a poor man's David Pollack. Not quite as agile or as much variety on the pass rush as Pollack.

Still, a very productive player. I preferred Khalif Barnes, but I'm hardly opposed to a DE or continuing to beef up the lines in general. The defensive line was a disaster last year. Other than JT it was pure mush. You can't count on Timbo anymore and I think Chester is the most overstated player on the team.

This is a great, great pick for us. Superb late R1 value on an aanimal of a football player. A poor mans Pollack. A beast who NEVER EVER gives up on a play.

I think I like this pick but we need to focus on offense more. I hope McPherson is available in the 3rd. That kid is going to be a monster and whoever gets him got a steal. He would have been a top pick had he not had that incident in his past and stayed in FSU. He probably would have led the Seminoles to a championship. He should be our future and we should build around him and Brown.

We have our DE's///maybe Roth will be moved to the DT position? Strange pick...we might have been better of taking Nugent???:shakeno:

Boomer,
Two questions:
How do you feel about brodney pool. I thought he would have been an excellent combo of need and value here.
Can Roth play OLB?
Thanks.

He converted from LB to DE in 2002, I think he'll be converted back to LB and play both LB and DE.
This is the kind of player who gives us horizontal depth, which is a Belichick trademark.
Roth could play OLB or even ILB in the 3-4, and DE in the 4-3.
I'm sure Saban got a very good look at Roth when Iowa beat LSU in their bowl game this past season.

I wonder what we do with the line now? start JT and Roth at DE and Holliday and Carter at DT? or rotate Roth and Holliday?

OVERVIEW

Matthew Roth is regarded as one of the premier pass rushers in the collegiate ranks and one of the toughest players in the country. He is a blue-chip prospect with a blue-collar work ethic. Roth is a colorful character who plays the game as if he is on a "search and destroy" mission. He is the source of a campus urban legend, as many Hawkeyes talk of the time Roth challenged and cleared out an entire bar in a fight.

Even in practices, the coaches have to pray he stays under control. They will generally blow the whistle early on plays, so Roth does not hurt any of the offensive players. There are times where he plays with such intensity in practices that the coaches must sit him down, even for walk-throughs.

Roth was a standout linebacker and fullback at Willowbrook (Ill.) High. He was a consensus All-State pick and named Illinois High School Athlete of the Year by the Chicago Tribune as a senior, totaling 161 tackles with four sacks, 23 stops for losses, 10 forced fumbles and a state-record 12 blocked kicks. He also scored four times while gaining 307 yards rushing.

Roth began his Iowa career as a middle linebacker, recording 19 tackles (12 solo) in 12 games as a reserve in 2001. He shifted to the defensive line in 2002, as the coaches felt he played with too much reckless abandon to be effective as a linebacker. Roth responded to the move by recording 48 tackles (22 solo) with 10 sacks, 11 stops behind the line of scrimmage and 11 quarterback pressures, despite starting only one game. Roth took over left end duties in 2003, collecting 51 tackles (32 solo) with 12 sacks, 16 stops for losses and four forced fumbles. Only Leroy Smith (18 in 1991) had more sacks in a season for the Hawkeyes.

With an addional 10 pounds of muscle on his frame in 2004, Roth put together a banner senior season, earning All-American honors. He ranked fourth in the Big 10 Conference with eight sacks and registered 15 stops for losses (sixth in the Big 10), eight pressures and 49 tackles (34 solo) while leading the conference with three forced fumbles.

In 49 games, he started 25 times, recording 167 tackles (100 solo) with 23 quarterback pressures, thirty sacks for minus-192 yards, 43 stops for losses of 224 yards, eight forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a pass deflection. His 30 career sacks rank third in school history, topped only by Mike Wells (33, 1990-93) and Jared DeVries (42, 1995-98). Only Wells (54) and DeVries (78) registered more tackles behind the line of scrimmage in a career for the Hawkeyes.

ANALYSIS

Roth is a well-built athlete with a powerful upper body, long arms, broad shoulders, quick feet, above average explosion off the snap, narrow hips, thick thighs and calves. His quickness allows him to be very effective on stunts, playing with his hand down wide to the open side to get after the quarterback instantly coming out of his stance. He does an excellent job of generating a strong hand punch, showing good extension to keep the blockers off his body to shed.

This draft is awesome.

I kinda wanted Cody, Crowder or MCPherson... but we got two very safe and quality draft picks.

This is brilliant.

I dislike this pick! Dan Cody is a far better pick! These teams are looking stupid...they are overlooking Dan Cody, then Khalif Barnes is being overlooked...Marcus Johnson just got chosen by Minny instead of Barnes???

With Roth...we could use him as a RE, and use Carter/Holliday as DTs. Or we could use him as an OLB, but IMO he is too tall and big for an OLB. Dan Cody woulda been better. I AM impressed with Matt Roth's 30 sacks in 49 games, wow...just wow. But we coulda done better......hopefully in the 3rd round, Ben Wilkerson/Elton Brown/Jason Brown will still be there...we desperately need a Center.

Kevin Carter is just temp. Holliday is crap and just a situational rotational player.

Roth will be rotating on David Bowens side and could be the replacement for David Bowens when he gets cut this year or next. Carter will be moving between DE and DT. It's a good move to get our DL younger again. Later on in the draft and next year we can look at DT's.
