In retrospective, I think JJ rushed Dan back too soon. Remember in 98 he was still in the top 5 in QBs and in 99 he was slipping a little but not too much until he injured his shoulder. We still made the playoffs on the Defense's back, and JJ rushed Marino cuz he was thinking playoffs and he needed the General on the field. Marino was obviously hurt, no running game and a poor offensive line didnt help(remember all those sacks on the Dallas Turkey game?) By the time we played Jax, Marino was burnt out and im sure his shoulder was really bothering him.
If Marino was done, as many thought, he wouldve quit. He didnt want to, he really wanted to come back, but Wanny didnt want any of it, he wanted to start his own legacy, much like JJ when he replaced Shula. Marino flirted with the idea of playing in Minny and TB, but decided against it because he had such a solid foundation here in South Florida. Its like Elway or Michael Jordan playing for any other team(which was unthinkable before he retired for a second time and came back for the Wizards).
Marino just realized Wanny wasnt going to welcome him back, and rather than following the twilight years that great QBs like Montana and Unitas suffered through, he retired with grace. Looking back, as nice as a guy Wanny was, I hate him for truly ending the Miami Dolphins-Dan Marino relationship. I always thought there was another story behind Marino walking away from the desk job he "had" here. I think him and Wanny really didnt like each other.
Marino is aqua and orange through and through, for example he took the deskjob despite working for Wanny and he convinced Cris Carter to play for us to help us out. But I really dont think Dan likes Wanny for whatever reasons(some obvious), and I cant imagine how Dan REALLY feels about Wanny now that hes coaching Pitts. The man is a leech for Dan Marino. After hes done sucking up the place, he moves on to his next victim, but on the bigger picture, hes really is just a leech and Dan is a the giant the leech is pissing off.
