Merged: Rex Ryan is new Jets HC

So the jets plan on killing the career of yet another promising coach.
So how many does that make now- anyone keeping count?

For anyone that isnt I will give you a quick run down

1. The Jets have had exactly 2 coaches in their history with winning records-Al Groh (9-7) and Bill Parcells (29-19). Sammy Baugh almost pulled it off in 1961 but of course they were the titans back then.

So how about the rest?

1960-61 Sammy Baugh 14-14-0
1962 Clyde (Bulldog) Turner 5-9-0
1963-73 Weeb Ewbank 73-78-6
1974-75 Charley Winner (released after 9 games in 1975) 9-14-0
1975 Ken Shipp 1-4-0
1976 Lou Holtz (resigned after 13 games in 1976) 3-10-0
1977-82 Walt Michaels 41-49-1
1983-89 Joe Walton 54-59-1
1990-93 Bruce Coslet 26-39-0
1994 Pete Carroll 6-10-0
1995-96 Rich Kotite 4-28-0
1997-99 Bill Parcells 29-19-0
2000 Al Groh 9-7-0
2001-05 Herman Edwards 39-41
2006-08 Eric Mangini 23-25

Poor Rex Ryan :(

the jets are gonna be good next year......................................................for me to poop on.

I'm not concerned. Look what Rex Ryan has on defense in Baltimore - Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Samari Rolle, Ed Reed, Ngata....the list goes on. If I had that defense, I'd do a good job too.

It's going to take a few years to get his guys in there.

Jets are still going to suck....even more than this year.

Nice work man!

Personally, I don't think there's a lot to glean from that list. Most of the good ones didn't stay there more than a year (Carroll, Groh), and the one that did (Parcells) was a winner. I can't really speak to anything pre-Ewbank though as it is before my time really, lol. But when you reflect on that list a while, you realize that most of those are not good pro coaches.

I think Rex Ryan is an excellent defensive coach, and if he's given 3 year (always a big 'if' in NYC), I suspect he'll build a dominating defense there. The real question is whether he'll be like his dad Buddy Ryan--a HOF defensive coach but a mediocre head coach because all he did was protect his defense without fielding a vibrant offense. So, how Ryan handles the offensive coordinator position will be key. If he gets someone good and lets them run their own show, then he'll likely be a very good head coach. If he simply retrenches into protecting his defense like his dad did, then he'll be the next in that long list of mediocre Jet's coaches.

One thing is certain though, the AFC East isn't going to be a division for the weak of knees or the weak of heart. Bellicheck is an excellent HC with a very good defense, Sparano appears to be building a good smashmouth team with a good defense, and Ryan will surely have an exceptional defense. If defense truly wins championships, our division might just be the incubator. Look for NFC QB's playing the AFC East to have bad years from here on out, lol.

Rex Ryan is definitely going to be here for 3 years at least, unless he is terrible then he will be fired. Reason we have so many HC is because they all were horrible for the most part(Bill Parcells days were great, having a awesome HC). But at least we got something back from our SB team. Buddy Ryan was a key part for our SB team. So hopefully that means good karma for the Jets.
At least we don't have a conservative play not to lose guy like with Mangini and Herm. We never blitzed under Mangini it seemed like, he would come out with a few games in his career with heavy blitzing always to success yet he goes away from it, wanting to rush only 3 guys dropping the rest in coverage. Rex will bring a more creative defense, switching the formations more playing more 4 down DL sets. Will help some guys make more plays like Shaun Ellis, Kris Jenkins, CJ Mosely, maybe even Vernon Gholston. Also will help Calvin Pace as he had 7 sacks last year while being dropped back constantly.

I'm wondering if the Jets keep Brian Schottenheimer as OC, or if they go and bring Hue Jackson to be OC.

Rex Ryan to coach the Jets

I am not too worried here. If anything, I think it weakens the Ravens more than helps the Jets...any thoughts?

I think the Jets are a mess anyway. Maybe some where down the road, he will help them... Lets just hope not though...

ESPN was saying Shottenheimer (spelling?) Marty's son was in the race. I guess he had a lot of support inside the Jets locker room. Hopefully this creates even more turmoil! Shottenheimer was the Jets O-Coordinator.

Schotty had a great interview, thats why he was in the race. Rex Ryan also had a great interview and blew away the Jets owner.

How many of those guys actually were considered 'promising coaches'?

Great hire by the Jets.

Rex Ryan will not be the "savior" for the Jets. There is so much much more work involved with being a head coach compared to being a deffensive coordinator. As mentioned already, he was loaded with talent on the Baltimore defense.

Remember the 2000 SB champion Ravens team? That was a much more dominant defense and the DC that year ws Marvin Lewis. Dont you think his intentionwas to duplicate that type of team in Cincinnati? We all know how that has worked out.

I think with the level of talent on the Jets they will be another Baltimore Ravens type defense. Rex Ryan will make them that good. So we'll remain one of the toughest divisions in the league. Question is what will the Jets do on offense? That will be the key to their success.

great defensive mind with great blitz packages, but I'm interested to see how he does without Lewis,Suggs,Reed,McAllister,Scott, and Ngata among others.

This is not me as a Fin fan downplaying the Jets, I'm just curious to see how RYan does now that he doesn't have great defensive players. Marvin Lewis had a dominant D in Baltimore (so-so HC), Mike Nolan was a pretty good DC (below average HC), Ryan is the 3rd Baltimore DC to get a HC gig.

He has very good players in NY on defense though.. David Harris, Kerry Rhodes, Darrelle Revis(who was rated as a top 5 CB this year), Shaun Ellis, Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace....
He has a defense to work with, coaching was the main flaw last year to why they underachieved.
