Dom becomes DC, Richard Smith likely moving to Texans.

My question: Where does Jim Bates end up? There dosen't appear to be any further DC positions available? Does Saban try to add him to the staff as a position coach? Thoughts???

I think Nick has the Defensive guy he wants here with the understudy in (Muschamp) under him. I doubt he brings in anymore defensive staff as far as high profile names.. unless Venturi comes in as offered..

Yep this makes sense now. Muschamp obviously needed a more experienced eye watching over him, and I think Saban didnt want to consume all his own time doing that himself. I get the feeling Saban wants to be sat back, looking at the big picture and spending time on offense and defense equally.

Not really that big of a loss. I was actually thinking to myself earlier today that it might be for the best that the Dolphins release Smith with Capers coming in. Obviously Capers would have a major role in the defense, and Smith might not take so kindly to it. It probably would have created some tension in the locker room, so this is a good move.

Plus, while Capers doesn't have the DC title, you know for sure that is the role he will have.

"Kubiak reportedly stressed the need for Smith to recover somewhat for his offense being completely owned in week 1 vs the titanic force of Miami's defense.

"They completely ***** slapped us" said Kubiak, after a 34-10 opening day loss to the Dolphins.

"Not just ***** slapped, but like on some pimp tip, dog"."

Okay, so that didn't really happen. I guess it could though! ;)

You hit the nail right on the head.

Muschamp is our future def. coordinator unless another college comes around next year and offers him a head coaching job.

But, this could open the door for Saban to add Rick Venturi anyways and still keep DC where he's at. If Venturi comes in, it will solidify the concept that DC only plans on being here for a year and moving on next year...

"Something happened on the way to Houston: Something weird happened in what was thought to be an easy hiring of Jim Bates with the Texans as defensive coordinator. Bates was the leading candidate, and the Texans were expected to pay the most money. Early Tuesday, his bid for the job on Gary Kubiak's staff appeared to be dead. Kubiak was leaning toward hiring Richard Smith from the Dolphins and add another coach to work with him. Bates is going to talk to Kubiak on Wednesday to see if there is still a chance he might end up as the Texans' defensive coordinator."

If Bates is the odd man out, we should be asking him to come back home.
