The New depth chart shows Roth as the starting LDE. This was a bit surprising to some of us. However, the same day he is named a starter... it appears they are experimenting with him at Strongside Linebacker.
When Roth was first drafted... he was described as an undersized DE or Big Linebacker. He was supposed to eventually take over for Jason Taylor. That never happened. Anyways, I do like the idea of Roth trying out at Linebacker. If he's fast enough, which is a big question-mark... perhaps he can excel as a 3-4 linebacker.
Perhaps something like the "Older Junior Seau" model... where if the guy blitzes, he's too strong for a TE or FB to block and you have to stick an offensive lineman on him.
I always thought that Roth would make a better OLB than a DE in a 3-4. Watching him play at Iowa he was quick coming off the edge when rushing the passer and was always around the ball carrier. I thought for sure that Saban drafted him to eventually play OLB and was surprised when they had him gain weight. Maybe he would've already made the transition to OLB had we had the personnel to play the 3-4 under Saban/Capers. I have no idea if Roth has the ability to drop in coverage but I like the fact they're moving him around. My personal opinion is that Roth would excel at rushing the passer from the OLB position in passing situations. We'll see what happens.
I feel Roth can play OLB opposite Porter, He's got a good motor , something Sparano loves about him, Langford, Holliday and Merling will be in a rotation, Rod Wright may show somethings when the Bucs game is here, don't forget about Rod and Moses too, I feel great about this Defense!
If the coaching staff use him correctly at OLB, it could work. I agree with the guy who said just blitz him alot, and he may be too big for a Te or back to handle. I really am skeptical Roth has the agility and change of direction to play the position full time. I could see them juggling him at end and OLB spots depending on down and distance. Vrabel isnt exactly the most nimble of guys, but the Pats dont often put him in positions where that can be exposed.
