MERGED:Say NO to the retractable roof/retractable roof on Dolphins Stadium

Is the retactable roof a good idea?

Oh, and as for the retractable or not arguement.

I havent seen a legit reason why to not get the retractable roof.

-Money. The offseason could hold all kinds of activities.

-Same conditions. The heat and humidity would remain. We would never have it closed on a sunny day. Why would you even think that we would have it closed under such conditions?

-No hurricanes. Hoooray!

-If the team, the players and the NFL really don't want the roof to be closed during the downpours, then they will leave it open if it really makes that much of a difference to be able to play in the rain, mudd, and wind. Maybe during the light rains they will leave it up if the 'football atmosphere' isnt there.

The point of the retractable roof would be to eliminate the extreme conditions. Not the slight wind or the sprinkles.

I bet the players would tell you for the most part they dont want the rain, mudd and wind. Who on the team last year liked those hurricanes?
If you really want rain

excellent point. i cant watch the Rams or Colts play in their domes. some teams, like the Lions have the new turf that looks a lot like grass but its not the same

theres something to be said about watching that bright sun shine off the home-white uniforms

I was actually on the field at Detroit for a national wrestling tournement. The field is great. It isnt quite the same but it is argueable that it doesnt give a you a better grip and feel on the ground as natural grass. It gives you much better speed that other teams may not be used to and still has a good feel for it not being natural.

I would be for the turf.

Who said they would use it on hot, humid or sunny days anyway? how does playing in monsoon conditions give us any advantages? when was hot weather ever an endurance issue when its raining?

It's called playing in the elements. It's not all about the advantages.

Wayne is all about the mighty buck he cad add over a billion dollars a year of local buisness to south florida with some sort of roof. The roof is happening lets just hope it turns out to be retractable and as cool as this one:

the dolphins will have input but this is way beyond a roof just for the phins like it or not

Nothing is for sure yet.

It's all about getting the Super Bowl locked up every three years. If he cannot get it, the plan will be rethought. Putting a car dealership, a park, and a roof for concerts will never make him near what he wants.

Yes temperature can be an advantage but not as big as you think,
1.
Everyone practices in the heat in training camp and 90 degrees isn't uncommon anywhere.

2.
Players are from everywhere in the world and know what heat feels like

3.
You can simulate heat preety easily, Cold is another story

4.
In The bills famous home opener against the patriots on Field Temperature was 100+ degrees

Nice theroy but it really doesn't matter

It's not all about the heat. It's the added high humidity that teams from the north cannot duplicate in any practice. The humidity is what wears you down.

Try and look to the sidelines at anytime during a 1 pm game and almost everyone on the other team is huddled up on the bench with the cooling fans blowing on them.

From what I read already the FL legistlature wouldnt give any money for a roof. I actually wouldnt mind some sort of shade though for the nose bleed section. but real fans stay no matter what the elements throw at you (except for lightening)

As far as a fan, I think a roof is a horrible idea for The stadium. The Dolphins use to always win their 1 oclock games simply because the tempurature and humidity knocked the hell out of the other teams. If The packers or browns can play in blizzards we can play in some rain. This is football not baseball, play the game outdoors like it was meant to be played

One theory as to why the Dolphins seem to fade late every year is because they practice and play in the heat from July on and by December the are worn out. Who knows?

How many people have been to a 1:00pm game in September or October? As a season ticket holder I would love for there to be a roof on the stadium during those brutaly hot days.

Not me! That's why I live here. I love the heat.

To me the only roof they need should be at the practice facility.

I hope for a retractible roof. As long as it's sunny, it won't be closed. But playing in the rain does us no good.

But I think a lot of people are missing the point here. The main reason Wayne wants a dome is for the other 7 months out of the year (I'm hoping the Phins play a lot of January ball  ). He wants the ability to hold big concerts and events and be able to guarantee that the weather won't be a problem.

The real point was recently revealed. He wants the SB locked up every three years at Dolphins Stadium. The other events will make him money, but it would take quite a while for him to make his money back, not to mention start profiting from it. A SB every three years, and he would make the money back ten fold in ten years, without the other revenues.

I love what is happening. These are exciting times...the whole Dolphins village atmosphere that will take place will be awesome. Having the SB penned in every few years would also be a great opportunity for Mr. Huizenga and the Dolphins organization.

I'm on the fence regarding the roof but it seems to be the way the NFL is going so I'm for it. This seems like a time of change, team, organization and all.

Dang, half the thread was from January. Still a good topic.

I still hope for the retractable roof. And if it brings a SB every three years, even better.

These are exciting times. It's the dawn of a new era in Miami sports. :woot:

cool. it'd probaly be worth the investment. its easy on the eyes and probably has a lifespan in the decades. ive heard that pro-player was rated one of the worst fields probably because of the marlins. at any rate, we wouldnt have a mud-bowl against pittsburgh again

I lived in Miami almost my entire life up until I was 28. After staying away for just 1 year in Orlando, when I returned to Miami I couldn't believe just hot how it was.

The humidity in Miami is second to none, at least in my experience any way. I had ppl tell me the weather in Orlando was hotter than Miami, but it doesn't even compare. Even when I would travel to Jamaica it always seemed warmer in Miami than it did down in Jamaica.

The money for the roof would come from the owner I believe, not the state.

Well than sure we can play in a hurricane, doesn't bother me, we can have the roof open... if thats what the team and the organization wants. Many on this board seem confused about the retractable roof. It opens and closes. Ain't that something.

You know...I remember a Monday night game against Chicago I think it was where the more it rained, the more people stood up and got louder in there. I know I did anyway..But everybody was hyped up and the rain just made us all crazier.

Why go there? Everyone knows South Florida is a football town. Every other sport is a distant 2nd no matter how many titles they may or may not win in Miami.
No it isn't. Well maybe college football but not Dolphins football.

Actually having a retractable roof could be a disadvantage to your team. It's hard enough that your players can't hear audibles because visiting teams fans are louder than finfans, adding a roof will make it even worse.
