Miami was talking to Minny about Culpepper a month ago...and a week ago, prior to FA beginning. Seems pretty obvious that the desire to add Culpepper is sincere.

Culpepper has personally sabotaged his being traded to the Titans and basically has said he wants to play for Miami.

Is Brees talk and Schaub talk just a ploy to get the Vikings to accept our lowball offer?

I mean Brees comes here and we don't even have contract talks? Kick the tires a bit and send him on his way? This was the 2nd time we met with him was it not?

Saban knew that Brees was going to be available, but he pursued Culpepper 1st, and is dragging feet on Brees, and now the Schaub report.

I think Culpepper is Option A, and Culpepper thinks it as well

No, he didn't. That was most certainly not something anyone outside the Charger organization could have even speculated upon intelligently.

If you judge this by the scheme that got us Brown in the draft, you're dead wrong. Saban didn't establish his interest in Ronnie early -- he even walked out in apparent disinterest when Ronnie came up at one point.

There is no telling what strategy Saban is using now (if any). We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Brees left, his agent stayed behind to continue to negotiate.

How do we know that? I believe it was Clayton that reported there were no negotiations, and somebody from San Diego reported that Drew's agent reported being at his headquarters and not in Miami as of this afternoon.

hopefully within 16 hours we will know for sure, one way or another, but the Schaub trade talk with ALT while Negotiating with Brees is odd, I mean you can only drive down a FA price so much if at all. Can't see Miami going through the motions of Schaub and Culpepper in some attempt to drive down Brees...only the Vikings.

I mean keeping options open of course is the easy answer, but I still believe Culpepper is/was their 1st choice.

Excuse me??
Ummm everyone and their dog knew for a fact a good 3-5 days before FA was to begin that Brees was going to test the market, and then the delay in FA just gave more time for everyone and their dog to know that Brees was going to hit the market.

And you can't compare Draft strategies vs free agency so don't try.

You are usually spot on Jimmy, but I think you are wrong here. Everyone knew Brees was going to be available. Smith has wanted to go with Rivers the second he drafted him. Heck, Had Philip not held out his rookie season, Drew never has the seasons he had in 2004 and 2005.

The fact that Dre whurt himself in the last game was the perfect way to save face in Charger land and jettison Drew out for good. Has he not injure dhimself, they would have used the excuse that he failed to get them into the playoffs, which wouldn't have flown as high in the San Diego wind.

I don't know, maybe I am too close to the situation, but the writing seemd to be on the wall even two years ago that Drew's time was limited. I happen to have it on good athority (I am friends with an offensive player on the Chargers) that San Diego planned on going with Phil Rivers from this year forward.

You spoke of a month ago. I'm saying that there is no way Saban had information about Brees becoming a free agent a month ago.

This is a matter of tactics. The lessons apply to all phases of the personnel game.

Like you say, Smith has wanted to go with Rivers for a long time now. Marty is still there and has managed to stifle this desire.

I think you are too close to the situation. I doubt Saban has friends on the team who are keeping him appraised of the Charger situation.

Agreed. Great post. Unfortunately, I think at this stage it is becoming apparent to the Vikes as well.

I said a month ago referring to Culpepper, and 2 days prior to FA officially beginning.

That last sentence was really pretty looking but in the end is just a vague sentence that means little to anything you have said so far...know what I'm saying? LOL

What I am saying is 2 days prior to FA, Saban knew Drew was going to be available, and still went after Culpepper, and is still talking to Culpepper, it seems almsot like Culpepper believes it as well, he is scaring other teams off at this point.

I would think if Saban had Brees as option A, they would be farther along or already signed him by now.

I think you just proved my tactics point. That should sound to you almost exactly like what Saban did to build the hopes of one Braylon Edwards.

It's a matter of price no matter who the real target is. This statement applies equally to Brees and Pepper.

Are you sincerely telling me you had no idea that Drew Brees was going to be a free agent 3 days at least prior to March 3rd...? And then still did not know after the lengthy delay to start free agency?

Perhaps you did not know, but Saban knew, and every Charger fan knew Contract negotiations between them were never close and there was some mud slinging already starting prior to March 3rd.

Dude -- Samphin said from this year forward. He said nothing I saw about 3 days.
