I certainly like him as a better option than Culpepper, Ramsey or McNair. Relatively young, a proven talent, and you know Saban would do his due diligence on the injury. If he checks out, pay da man! You'd pay Cutler/Leinhart/Young huge money with a lot less certainty of their nfl abilities.

i thought SD announced him a FA at a Press conference yesterday?...or i might be wrong. Or he tested positive for chicken..i'm unsure. Nevermind i'll report it anyway.

Taking Drew Brees as a Free Agent sounds alot better than trading for a Culpepper who wont play this year at all and is coming off a Torn ACL-and also will require us to give up a high draft pick. NO TO CULPEPPER !

Why would San Diego lethim go??

Why arent you guys talking up Matt Schaub? Brees and that Shoulder would scare me. He wont be cheap and he wont even be able to throw for anyone until after he gets a huge contract, unless you want to wait until after the draft to sign him. Its a risk.

Would you sign a guy to a long term deal who cant throw a football until May? Add that to the fact he had an average arm to begin with.

Now, if Healthy, he has all the intangibles and intincts you would want in a QB. I like him, the injury would scare me if the Bills were interested.

i'm crying as a chargers fan and here's why....from the lips of our own GM....can't believe they are letting brees go (if they traded rivers, the cap hit would be $10 million)....

“I really like Philip Rivers very much, except he has never played in the National Football League, except to dabble in it and that is always a concern for all of us,” Smith said. “Anytime a collegiate player enters the National Football League, it starts all over again. There are first-round busts and seventh-rounders that go to (the Pro Bowl) every year.”

Well, you can guess my feelings from my new signature. I'm actually hoping to write a column about it, if I get a chance.

If he does indeed become an UFA, we have to sign this guy. He's an NFL-ready QB who's already proven himself now! Two good seasons in a row show he has now arrived.

He is one guy we can sign and plug in to play right away and make us a better team right away.

H. Wayne ... start up the money train and make a B-line for Drew's house!

NORMALLY, I would be right there on the wagon. The only Q at this time is his arm strength. He didn't have a real strong arm to begin with but he is smart, makes most of the throws he needs to, etc. Since his surgery, how much zip would he still have left on the ball. Even if his contract is heavily backloaded to allow us the first year to really see, if he's not able to perform as in the past, then we've wasted yet another year in our quest for a QB. this doesn't mean i don't want him or shouldn't pursue him. With that said, if we are able to sign him, then do it but i would still try and take Whitehurst in the 2nd rnd tho, JUST to be safe/er!

This is precisely my point with this thread!! Thanks!

As for the injury concerns, with modern medicine, and the fact that Brees is only 26, I'm really not worried at all. Players have come back from this injury time and again in many sports. And doctors can probably give a decent update on how his shoulder is recovering long before May when he'll be able to throw.

Point is - Brees is proven. He's essentially as sure a thing as we can find this or any other offseason. I'd love to draft Cutler, or any of the others, but we'll be waiting 2-3 seasons before they start playing really well. With Brees, were a SB contender instantly! That's why you start piling the money up as high as it takes!!!

I don't know yet. I'd want to see how that shoulder is, he may not be the same QB he was.

I'd give a few bucks out my next paycheck. Lets pass the hat. 27 year old pro bowl QB.

Yup plus taking in a new offense and having to get timing with the rest of the offense. Honestly the first season with him would be a wash. Gus would probably end up starting until the 2nd month of the season until he was ready with the offense.

Yeah, but that's probably gonna be the case with whoever we bring in, so we're comparing apples to apples.
