Skolnick kind of bashes Saban for using the "war" term at the Draft

Linky

Saban's most influential offseason acquisition? Considering how little the offensive line's personnel has changed, it's clearly Hudson Houck. Holdover players are raving how Houck's style (teaching) compares to that of his predecessor (talking). Houck, who is pushing Vernon Carey hard, will be well worth his $800,000 salary if he can work the same wonders he did in San Diego, among other stops.

I think you buried the lead. Primarily because Skolnick did a remarkable job of accomplishing that himself. Buried in "post draft observations" was his estimation Frerotte has a 60% chance at the starting QB position, compared to 35% for Feeley and 5% for Sage. Frankly, I think it was pathetic journalism, unless Ethan plans a more thorough examination in a forthcoming column. You don't matter-of-factly declare nearly a 2/1 advantage in the incoming challenger's favor without related quotes or specifics in regard to style of play, or anything other than "comfort in Linehan's system."

Saban was just drawing an analogy for crying out loud. Skolnick, as usual, comes across like the little whiner that he is.

I personally hate the war analogies. I understand Saban's point and frankly wouldn't write an article about it, but the war analogies bother me. I think it is time to find a new one. People die and are mamed and lose their children in wars. Football is a game where people make a lot of money. Again, I understand the point and am not bashing Saban in any way, but I do wish he'd come up with a new analogy.

Given the current war atmosphere it was probably not a good time to use that analogy but I am sure he wasnt being disrespectful to our military.

Skolnick needs to check himself. Unfortunately he has started crying into his Cheerios because Saban has shut Miami journos out and they are actually going to have to write stories and be creative, rather than rely on the press release journalism that the majority of Miami press seem to do.

Instead of actually working, it's unfortunate to see so many of them towing the journalistic party line which is to try and screw Saban over. I know Skolnick reads this - you'll lose my friend. You should get behind the coach now rather than *removed* him when we actually get somewhere and pretending like you were on the bandwagon from the start.

I'm sorry Crunch and this is no way directed at you - you're a good guy and a good poster - but people need to seperate the word "war" when used in sports and the word "war" to descibe conflict. Anyone who starts whining about how it's disrespectful should get some sugar for their high horse.

Again not in any way meant at you Crunch, just a general comment.

I'd like to thank Ethan for pointing out how offensive (is that a war word?) Saban was being. Somehow I made it all the way through Saban's post draft PC without being upset by his war analogy. It's good to have people in the press who painstakingly report on the important things that we sometimes miss. I mean, I might have totally over looked this colossal news story if it weren't for Ethan.

Yes you are right.Much ado about nothing.Football can be compared to war.You use your best weapons to take advantage of your opponent weaknesses. You throw a bomb to devastate his defenses. The game plans are similar to war plans in structure. You use strategy to win.The analogies are hard to get away from.BTW I am an ex military man and the analogy didnt bother me.

Skolnick goes to battle against the use of Saban's planning for War analogy. Me thinks the analogy shot directly over his head.

He doesn't like it. He doesn't understand the mentality of football. He doesn't like being on the wrong side.

Skolnick better use some good analogies in his writing. He should show us why Football is a kinder, gentler, peaceful type of game like... synchronized swimming? Let's make those unis pink why were at it.

Well Saban was talking about planning a war and planning battles and how things never work as planned. He was not talking about killing people or being under fire.

This article is a joke. Seriously, as a man who has been in "War" who gives a damn if someone uses the word war for something they are doing. Hey Ethan, people like you are killing this country, less political correctness and more common sense.

Note: I emailed this same response to Ethan. :shakeno:

why are people so upset over the "war" comment. same thing last year with the "soldier" winslow. who cares. people say it all the time. it doesnt mean they are compairing what they do to what the kids in IRAQ or Afganistan are doing. its simply a state of mind.

terms like this are used all the time.
in the trenches,
hes a warrior
im a soldier
we are gunna kill them

who cares. we all know what he means.
