DANIA BEACH - Backup nose tackle Paul Soliai was nearly as nervous watching last weekend's draft nearly as he was two years ago when the Dolphins selected him in the fourth round out of Utah.

He wasn't experiencing a déjà vu, but felt if the Dolphins didn't take another nose tackle that would mean they still had confidence in him after a turbulent second season.

"I was nervous,'' said Soliai, just before catching a 6-pound, pea**** bass at a Dolphins junior angler fishing clinic with children from the local boys and girls clubs. "Everybody's nervous they don't bring in more guys to compete for your job.

"Definitely, it showed even more [confidence in me] that they didn't draft another nose. I've got to keep going and learn from Jason Ferguson how to use my legs more, being more stout and taking on double teams.

"By the end of the year I learned a lot and wasn't getting moved.''

The Dolphins were expected to draft a young nose tackle to groom to eventually replace Ferguson, who is 34 and nearing the end of a stellar career. However, Boston College's B.J. Raji and Mississippi's Peria Jerry were off the board at Nos. 9 and 24 respectively before Miami took Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis at No. 25.

Soliai better get his act together because like we saw last year with the FB position Miami has no problem with cutting guys and trying to replace them with Free Agents until they get it right. Miami also signed Joe Cohen and if the kid competes and does a good job he could beat out Soliai. I honestly hope some DT becomes available because our Depth at DT reminds me of our QB position last year. If we lose Ferguson to injury we are gonna have a huge hole on defense.

That's definitely not what you want to hear from a player...

"God i'm glad they didnt bring in competition for me."

if it isnt a wake up call, and he doesnt prove, in TC, that he can start, he is useless and hopefully a goner!

I totally agree, I hate his attitude. Im really hoping somebody is cut and becomes available via Free Agency. I think Remi Ayodele who was with Dallas could become available if the Saints release him. Miami won't hesitate to cut his fat ***, think about how Miami last year released Boomer Grigsby and Casey Cramer until they found a gem in Lousaka Polite.

I think you guys are looking at it a little different than me.
He prob just sees it as if they took someone that ment he would prob be out of Miami.
I think this guy can play and i hope this is the year he pans out.
We knew when we drafted the guy it was gonna take awhile for him to finally have it click and i hope this is the year

I took it to mean he thinks the FO has confidence in him. Nothing more, nothing less.

Man I dont like this kid and trust me I would like nothing more than for him to become the next haloti Ngata, but he just annoys the hell out of me with his attitude and lack of effort. BTW I bet those two suspensions last year we cause he did not meet weight demands which Miami has.

He better straighten the hell up if he wants to stick around here. If he kept his head on straight, he wouldnt be sweating buckets about losing his job.

Yeah, I would rather him say he wishes they brought 5 new NT in so I can kick their arses. His attitude blows and you can tell he does not have any confidence.

We don't know the context of the question - it was at a fishing tournament of all places. He's never seemed like the brightest crayon in the box, so I doubt he put a whole heckuva lot of thought into it before answering.

The flashes he showed down the stretch last year might've gone a long way in showing he can stay. Personally, I think if he doesn't pan out, Joe Cohen is next in line anyway.
