I've been saying go with AJ because a 34 year-old Frerotte is merely a stopgap. Ina year or two, we'd have to turn it over to a young draft pick or another Fiedler/Feeley (someone else's backup), who would struggle for at least a year or two. By the time we had a quality QB, our current starting defense would be very, very old:
JT (34)
Carter (35)
Traylor (40)
Holliday (33)
Zach (35)
Seau (39)
Spragan (32)
Madison (34)
Howard (31)
TJones (34)
Bell (30)
True, we drafted a few guys who look like they may be good players, but none who give us reason to believe they'll be as good as JT, Zach, Carter, Madison, Seau, etc. have been. Even if Gus plays reasonably well this year, in the long run it just doesn't make sense.
Sage deserves a shot. He's younger, taller and more athletic than Feeley. He was drafted higher in the same draft. He was as good, or better, than Feeley in college. He was as good or better than Feeley last preseason. He was much better this preseason. Let's face it, Sage played well this preseason. Not just better than the other guys, but legitimately well. Yes, it was against 2nd and 3rd stringers, but that's also what he had on his side. As bad as our starting OL has been, our 2nd and 3rd string OL is even worse.
Sage didn't play particularly well int he finale against Baltimore last year, but he did do some things well. He threw the best long pass we've seen in years on the opening play to Chambers. He didn't lose his composure. And it was against a very good Ravens defense. I don't see the worst-case scenario with Sage starting as being any worse than that for Gus or AJ. They are all equally capable of truly sucking.
It may be that, whoever we start this year, we'll be left int he unfortunate situation described above re: the age of our defense. But at least there is a chance that Sage could develop into that guy. There have been many good, even Hall of Fame, QBs who weren't good until they were 28 or older. The odds are against it for Sage, but at least there's some chance. The same can't be said of Gus.
