Merged: The Blog: The Wes Welker Debate: Cut him or keep him?

Anyone who thinks Welker isn't versatile didn't see him make a 3rd down catch, kick a field goal, kick off, and then make the tackle. Not to mention, he probably had the best hands on the team last year. There's NO way Cliff Russel makes the team ahead of Wes. He's a proven 3rd down reciever and top-10 return man. You just don't cut a guy with the skills and heart of Wes.

i hope we dont cut him.hes a playmaker in the return game

He's probably the slowest return man I've ever seen. I actually prefer him more as a receiver than a returner. As a returner, he's nothing special to me at all. And, please don't bring up his returned kick for a TD against Baltimore - he can shake & bake, but dude almost got ran down by a linebacker.....what does Welker clock in the 40, like 4.6?

I'm praying for the emergance of Marcus Vick, Kelly Campbell, or another guy as a return man. We desperately need some speed back there to open up a shorter field for Culpepper & the offense.

yeah, i cant see welker being cut. if he left us he would just shine somewhere else and we would all be pissed that he wasnt with us. i got a friend who is a charger fan and he says he misses welker. i can see his point.

Thanks, that was a good read.

I'd hate to see Welker get cut, but it's speaks well of the talent we may have at reciever if that happens.

Welker or someone pretending to be him responded to the blog. I did too, under Kevin.

speed isnt that important in punt returning....shake and bake is much more important.....once you get past the final wave of coverage and/or the punter....its to the house you go......and so what if he MAYBE gets tackled inside the 10 yd line....its better then being fast and tackled immediately....

I agree Welker leaves a lot to be desired as a KR, but is still one of the better PRers in the league. The dude has some of the best jukes in the league, sometimes quickness makes up for speed.

Wes Welker supposedly was the first to reply.

To be honest, I don't think Bedard is off the mark. I'm one of Wes' biggest fans. And I think it could happen for any of the reasons Bedard listed.

I would really hate to lose him because he's proven not only that he can catch in an actual game, but he's clutch as a receiver.

EDIT: Thanks to the second "Wes Welker" for your input. Great job jackass.

Welker is a lock.

no, he is not. there are guys behind him that are bigger, stronger, faster and have far greater upside. for that reason welker will have to fight to keep his job every august and thus can't be considered "a lock."

I agree with the punt returner part, I mean, I guess that's all about making the best decisions. But hey, in the return game, speed kills. Who's to say Campbell, Vick, Devin, or any of those other guys can't make the moves necessary?

At least in the kick return game, I'd like a faster guy back there...
