The Vonnie Holliday release watch is on. The 11-year veteran is due $1.5 million in a roster bonus the first week of March.

If you haven't noticed we're in the first week of March. The Dolphins are interested in renegotiating his contract. Holliday wants to get paid what he's owned on a back-loaded contract he signed in 2007, which up to last season was very team friendly.

It'll be interesting to see who blinks first, if anyone. Holliday is due $2.8 million in base salary, has that $1.5 million roster bonus hanging over Miami's head, and is due a $200,000 workout bonus.

The free agent market isn't exactly sizzling at this moment, but considering all the teams looking for 3-4 ends it is very likely Holliday will find work. While it would be beneficial to get his contract in order, releasing him would only create another hole on the roster, and banish a team leader; one that has helped bring along young defensive ends Kendall Langford, Phillip Merling and Lionel Dotson (his teammates rave about his improvements last season, and have me curious).

The Miami Dolphins will release defensive end Vonnie Holliday, his agent Brian Levy is telling me.

"He enjoyed his time here," Levy said. "He did everything asked of him and he can leave with his head held high. This is a business. Players leave teams and teams leave players. It's an amicable split. He's happy to have left the Dolphins on winning note."

The Dolphins are taking this step because they were due to pay Holliday a $1.5 million roster bonus Tuesday and another $500,000 bonus later this offseason.

The Dolphins take a $2.5 million cap hit.

restructure his contract please. He's a good player, a good leader, and a good role model. C'mon tuna!

i was thinking since he made it this far that he wouldnt be released but this changes things a bit.

Not sure what message would be sent if he is cut. Work your tail off, support management and the team, teach the youngsters but your salary is too high so peace...i know players get cut all the time but this guy is a captain and leader.

They can afford and need him on this team.

Is he worth the money for this upcoming year? yes.
But this FO is about assessing and keeping talent w/o overpaying for it.
Something I agree with.

Keep him for now. Try and restructure his contract, but if you can't, just pay it and keep him. Make a final decision on him after you see if you can replace him in the draft. They already have his replacement as a starter in Merling, but make sure you can add depth before getting rid of him.

Vonnie has been released, according to Salguero.

We actually save $4.8 million in cash, but the move creates a $2.5 million cap hit.

Dolphins Release Vonnie

Dolphins informed DE Vonnie Holliday of his release.

The move saves $4.8 million in cash, but causes Miami a $2.5 million cap hit. Holliday apparently refused to take a pay cut. The 33-year-old should have another season or two left after a productive 2008 campaign, but the Fins are ready to move on with Phillip Merling and Kendall Langford as starters.

That's too bad...I liked Vonnie. If I was the GM I would have let Crowder go.
