Merged: What happens to the Saints if Katrina rolls through?

isn't the stadium being used as a shelter? I thought I saw them letting people in on the news this morning. I didn't catch what was being said.

From CNN.com

Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco said that westbound traffic was heavy and that the state police was urging people to travel to the north or east. Nagin said the city could expect complete loss of electricity and water services once the storm had done its work and that the Superdome, the city's main shelter, "is not going to be a very comfortable place at some point in time.

Of course there are more things to worry about concerning the city of New Orleans than the Saints, but I came across this..

In August of 2000, Joseph Suhayda, director of the Louisiana Water Resources Research Institute at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge said:
"A slow-moving Category 3 or any Category 4 or 5 hurricane passing within 20 or 30 miles of New Orleans would be devastating."

The storm surge water pushed into a mound by hurricane winds would pour over the Pontchartrain levee and flood the city. A severe hurricane could push floodwaters inside the New Orleans bowl as high as 20-30 feet, covering most homes and the first three or four stories of buildings in the city, he says. "This brings a great risk of casualties."

In this type of scenario the metro area could be submerged for more than 10 weeks, says Walter S. Maestri, Director of Emergency Management for Jefferson Parish, which encompasses more than half of the city. In those 10 weeks, residents would need drinking water, food and a dry place to live.

10 weeks is a long time.. Would they play their games somewhere else? I figure it would be a logistical mess to play in New Orleans this year if this hurricane imposes the catastrophic damage it is expected.. We are scheduled to play in NO on Oct 30th..

On a side note, is Saban's family in Miami now?

Regardless, Godspeed and God bless all in the path of this monstrocity..

Prayers for everyone in its path...God bless

Two years ago there were wildfires in San Diego so we played them in Arizona. I imagine that if something catastrophic happened and the Superdome was inaccessible, the Saints would find a temporary home at a nearby University or something like that. I actually think it'd be cool for the Saints to play on grass.

I think the Saints would play in LSU's stadium, its the only thing I can think of. Its the closest stadium, and the guy on the weather channel said that if the storm stays on its current course, the water level could be at 15 feet INSIDE the Superdome! Jesus Christ!

My prayers are with everyone in the path of the storm, especially those who live in New Orleans, and praying that this hurricane weakens and moves east. Because New Orleans is below sea level it can't take a direct hit from a major hurricane. Who cares about football, I just hope this thing doesn't totally destroy NO and kill hundreds of people.

P.S. As for the Saints, I hope that if this thing hits that they would cancel the season out of respect for the victims.

the NFL WILL NOT cancel their season, come on. They may have to relocate for their home games, but the league will not just operate with 31 teams. It would be a nightmare.

Why would they cancel the season for the Saints? I would think watching Saints games might be one of those things that helps ease the pain, however briefly, for the victims and fans.. Sortve like how role sports played following 9/11

I just hope for a safe evacution for the people in the area. I have family in Gulfport,Mississippi area who are sitting in traffic right now heading to Florida to avoid the storm. I just hope they have a place to come back to

I think that's the last thing the city of New Orleans is worrying about now...

Either way, Baton Rouge is going to get hit hard, too. They could play up in Shreveport at La. Tech's stadium, maybe in Hattiesburg at So. Miss' stadium, maybe in Mobile, possibly even in a place like Little Rock, Austin, or San Antonio.

Remember, when Soldier Field was renovated, they played in Champaign, which is almost closer to St. Louis than Chicago.

Like I said, though, they'll worry about this when it matters, which might not be for a while.

Yeah Gulfport is right next to Biloxi. I just hope they get out in time

Anyone remember last year, exactly this time, last Pre Season game against the Saints, in New Orleans, we were getting ready for a Major Hurricane, and they were pretty accomodating to us, by helping us out in everyway they could, so of course our thoughts and prayers a year later. And forever to say a "nothing" hurricane, that's not fair. Just because Florida was hit with a Category one, doesn't mean we didn't get hit. We suffered damage, no Hurricane is nothing, we lost 9 or 10 people due to this storm locally, and we had a lot of damage. As for The Gulf Coast, Wow, this is like the Bad Perfect Storm. Thoughts to everyone affected.

I can sympathize with you guys in Miami because I am at the point in the state where the eyes of all three crossed last year and i realzie it is no picnic at all. With that said, anyone who loses their life in in a category one is likely a victim of their own stupididty and not taking the storm seriously. Most shelters are relatively safe in a one, and a lot of people lose their lives on the road.
