Why did we not trade Welker with a team in another division? I like the draft picks but I hate to give our rivals players that can hurt us later especially the Pats. :dolphins:

Good point, but I highly doubt anyone outside of New England would have been willing to surrender those picks for Welker. With the state we're in, making that trade with the Patriots was huge. Our future is now in good hands with Mueller / Cameron in my opinion, and executing these kinds of trades is how we rebuild without tearing in down completely....

It was a great trade for both teams, but in the end, I think we'll come out of this looking much better off....

PHINZ RULE!!!

Yeah...sometimes that just how the cards fall. I love the much needed picks we acquired though.

I am never a fan of trading within your division. I'm not too hot on trading within the conference either. But the truth is that New England came to us about Welker and with that offer on the table there was no way we could turn it down.

It was a "shotgun" trade. All the Pats had to do was file the RFA offersheet with terms the Dolphins couldn't match.

The Dolphins knew that, so the two teams sat down and hammered out a "trade" because it is in the NFL owners best interest to not use the poison pill in RFA offer sheets.

The threat of the poison pill made Welker's move to the Pats inevitable, one way or another. Doing it as a trade was the best for Kraft, Huizenga, and their NFL owner buddies.

If the Dolphins wanted to keep Welker, they needed to tender him at $1.8 million, which would have set the compensation at a first round pick. Why they didn't do that, I have no earthly idea. The guy had 67 catches, handled 89 punts/kicks without a fumble, and killed the division rival Patriots.

I guess the new brain-trust just wanted to get rid the old regime's leftovers and clear the deck to bring in "their guys"?

Basically we got a very good payday for an average player. I'll take it any day, from anyone! Oh, yeah..... Thank You...Randy/Cam!!

Because it wasn't our choice. If we didn't trade him, then they would've just signed him to that lucrative offer sheet and handed us a 2nd-rounder. Basically, they gave us the 7th-rounder as a bonus to just get it done quicker rather than having to go through that seven day period. It was also the difference between $38 million and $18 million. In the end, I think Mueller saw the opportunity of getting a 2nd-rounder, and realized that no other team would be dumb enough to do such a thing. Well, actually, not as dumb for New England because he fits their offensive scheme to perfection. Small, quick, good route runner in the slot. He'll fit nicely with Stallworth & Caldwell. And, actually, let's see if he turns into a complete free agent bust. Caldwell was nice last year and Stallworth will definitely be penciled in ahead of Welker. Then, you've got your wild card in Chad Jackson who has the potential to be better than all three of them.

Wes Welker isn't worthy of what he was traded for. That is quite obvious.

Good #3/slot receiver, awful kick returner, above average punt returner. That's it.

NE makes all the right moves!

Is it just me or has NE basically locked up the division title for next year??? I mean it's just unfair... they see us creeping up on them, possibly, and they counter by signing our most productive offensive player to THEIR team =(

yes, they might have given us too much for him... but basically they made a dynamic, smart move signing him. he had the most catches for the fins last year and next year he will be playing against us.

I really think this move shows the fins are finally building for the future (giving up welker to division rival for nice draft picks..... basically concieding the afc east to them for at least one more year)

The Dolphins have been a very veteran team the past several years. The Wannstedt era was filled with wasted draft picks. The Saban era had it's share of wasted draft picks. If you look at the Dolphins roster over the past few years very few of our starters were drafted by the Dolphins themselves. Cameron and Mueller know this and they know that if they want to build for the future they have to get good value for what they have now. However I think it's time we stop patting ourselves on the back for the Welker trade, albeit to the evil Patriots, and start looking forward to the rest of the free agency period up to the draft. We have several needs we need to address this offseason and I just hope Cameron and Mueller are willing to do what it takes. We already saw Stallworth choose the Pats over us earlier today.

Nobody knows yet if they made the right decisions.

If Stallworth fails a test and little Wes gets injured and age sets in early on Adalius and he begins to fade, well then, they didn't accomplish much.

Or,if Donte stays clean and healthy and Wes remains in tact, and if Thomas doesn't let all that money and age go to his head, then ya, they have a good shot at winning the division again.

Hopefully they won't have a good draft. I just pray they don't draft Bryan Leonard or Michael Griffin.

Never the less we will probably defeat them both games next year.
Our boys have Brady's number.

It's still sucks though. That Scott Pioli man, the guy's a CG- a certified genius. He does his job extremely well. Not for nothing, I really like what Mueller is doing for us, but Pioli's work stands for itself.

At some point it was rumored Pioli was looking to get out of NE and he was in my nightly prayers. I guess God has bigger issues than football to attend to. Who knew?

McMichael, I don't see this as conceding the East to them. I see this as Randy/Cam getting their own type of players the best way, draft them. Any time you can get a 2 and 6 pick for an undrafted player, other than your #1 QB, you have GOT to take it, it's just good management. Those are FREE draft picks my friend, and we've been giving too many of them away over the last few years on players that didn't work out.

Welker will develop a nice rapport with Tom Brady, and fills Troy Brown's shoes ably for them... However, the 60th pick is a nice move towards getting younger... Provided we don't F it up...
