Was just listening to Colin Cowherd on my way back from lunch. He stated he had breaking news from Mort regarding the signing of Jake Long. Apparently, Parcells gave Long and his agent a Tuesday deadline to get a deal done or they were going to move onto the next guy. According to Mort, the next guy in line if Jake Long hadn't signed yesterday was Chris Long. This is why a deal with Jake Long was done so early in the week.

And it's awesome. No nonsense, get the job done, kind of attitude.

I love the way our Dolphins are being ran by the Tuna. Talkm about a no nonsense type of guy.

That makes sense.

I read in an Armando Salguero column that there was no hard deadline. Rather, there was an "implicit deadline". Salguero is a putz.

It's encouraging to know that BP had reserved time to get a deal done with another player if the deal with Jake didn't come through.

IMO, that Jake Long playing to the whistle on every down, and that Chris Long was the second choice over Gholston speaks to the kind of motor BP wants his draftees to have. That may give more than a subtle hint about the players we go after next.

Why in the world would Jake need a deadline with the type of money we gave out. He's making much more than any number 1, and on only a 5 year deal. If we added the 6th year in the contract (which almost everyone gets and the longer contract benefits the team) it would be a 70 million dollar deal with 35 million + guaranteed... crazy #'s for an OL.

Bill takes no prisoners. The Adults are back in charge!

I think the 5 and 6 year deal will be drastically overlooked, but is one of the most brilliant things about the contract. In the case that Jake Long is a bust, he is out of our hair 1 year earlier. Plus I don't see him resigning with us if he isn't a bust for as much money as this contract is worth. I see it as a win win.

I'm not making a big issue of the 5 year deal but in football a longer deal is better for the team because you can release a guy at any time before his contract is done. The 5 year deal was better for Jake not the dolphins. I was just bringing up the fact that if this contract was a 6 year deal like every other No. 1 pick it works out to a $70 million contract, so Jake of course was going to accept that type of money deadline or not.

The five year vs six year contract bothered me at first. But if Jake's a stud you'd want to lock him up with an extension before it got to his last year, anyway. There's no way we wouldn't know if he's a stud by then.

The other thing is all these morons asking for more money when they have multiple years left on their deals. What are the odds that if you signed a first round pick to a 10 year deal that he'd actually play under it's terms for a decade. Almost nil.

Just one more thing to fix during the next CBA, are these a-cracks asking for more money because they feel they're underpaid. If you sign it, play for it.

Dolphins were planning to turn attention to Chris Long @ 1

According to Mortenson:

The early signing of Jake Long by the Miami Dolphins seemed to catch a lot of people off-guard. It was by design, and there was a Plan B ready to go.

Bill Parcells, the vice president of football operations for the Dolphins, had set an internal deadline of Tuesday to get the deal done or he would have turned to Virginia defensive end Chris Long, according to team sources.

Well at first I was very happy when the thinking that the pick was between Jake Long and Gholston. I think Gholston has a strong potential to bust IMO.

To find out Chris Long was a close second choice of ours is something I really didn't want to hear.

I believe this guy would have anchored our D for years to come and brought the same level of excitement, if not more, that JT has over the years.

I hope we don't end up regretting this and I'll hate having to see this guy tear it up for another team.

Here's to hoping that Jake Long becomes and absolute mauler.
