Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor on Wednesday replied strongly to some of the negative comments former player Bob Kuechenberg made in Tuesday's edition of the Chicago Tribune.
"It's another chapter in the grumpy Kuechenberg story," Taylor said. "It's Kuechenberg. He gets up every year and (complains) about something. If it ain't one thing, it's another. He needs a hug and a hobby. It's ridiculous."
Among the comments made by Kuechenberg, who played guard from 1970-84, were that the current Dolphins "had no soul" and that coach Nick Saban should be "impeached."
"Come on, the guy has been here a year and a half," Taylor said. "We won six games at the end of the year and we talked about it all offseason. Don't get all excited because we won six games at the end of the year. It's still a process what we're trying to get done here. We're close. We haven't made the plays. We're not playing very well. We're playing well enough to win games right now.
"But give the guy a year and a half and run him out of town? You brought him in like he was Jesus last year with the palm leaves and the parade. I mean, give the man some time. It's amazing. People have an opinion. I understand that. People expect a lot and want a winner. In New York, they want to beat the Dolphins twice a year. That's about it. Down here, they want a winner and they should. I appreciate that. Myself, I expect a winner so I'm disappointed, too. But when the stock goes down at Microsoft, I don't call Bill Gates and say impeach him and start bitching and moaning about that either. You've got to be patient and it will work out."
Saban said he didn't have any reaction to Kuechenberg's comments.
"There's only one sin in this business and that's losing," Saban said. "I know a lot of people here have tremendous pride in this organization, there's a lot of tradition in this organization and we're working very, very hard to restore that tradition to this organization so our alumni guys can be proud. We want to have a great relationship with those guys and we want them to be proud of what we do. I only feel badly that we haven't been able to do it better for them, for our owner Wayne Huizenga, for our fans in South Florida."
