MergedX2: ILB Derek Smith signed

He's a good veteran LB. Much better than any of the backups we have right now. The only think that bothers me about this is why we did it. I sure hope it's not because Channing won't be able to play on Sunday.

Kershaw was activated from the practice squad yesterday.

I am wondering if this is insurance in case Crowder isn't ready?

Derek Smith is 33 years old and in his 12th season out of Arizona State. He's 6'2" 240 and played for the 49ers. A bit surprising that we'd sign a guy that old.

Smith doesn't have much left in the tank, I'm surprised as well. He does have 3-4 experience though as he's played for the 49ers and Chargers last. He was cut by SD in favor of Michael Bennett in November though and hasn't been with a team since.

Let's just hope that it is an insurance policy for Crowder. But not having Crowder will have another major impact on the Defense. I know a lot of people want Crowder gone after this season. But be careful what you ask for...you might just get it.

There is more of chance that Crowder's replacement will be worse than not better than Crowder. He is a solid to good LB in the NFL, there are plenty of teams that have let someone like him go and not find a replacement AS GOOD as the player they let go for years to come. Championship teams are built with having more Solid to Good players than the other team. The stars are great to have, but they MUST have a very SOLID supporting cast around them, just ask DAN!

Miami has a 30+ year old secondary...that is more than enough draft picks needed to start rebuilding it. They spent no picks on it last season in the draft. We are getting killed with spread type offenses this year. We need to worry about drafting more OL, DE (Pass Rushers) and CB next draft...no space to add a Day One Pick for a starting LB.

If Crowder is able to play vs. the JETS, Miami will increase the the chance for success by a large margin. He is vital to the Run Stuff and 3-7 yard curl/slant patterns.

Crowder's replaceable with a dozen guys in every draft.

I have to respectfully disagree.

What does Crowder do that's so special? He's a good tackler who plays the run well. That's it. He has zero pass-rushing or play-making ability. 1.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and zero INTs in 57 games spanning four seasons.

Solid linebackers, which is what Crowder is, are easy to find. He's going to get overpaid in the offseason and it doesn't need to be by us.

Crowder has a big motor and that is about it. His coverage skills suck which is a big responsibility for an ILB in the 3-4. Cover the TE on his side. I really don't think he is that good against the run. He rarely cuts off plays at the point of attack. If you are talking numbers he has them but tackles 5 yards down the field for a LB is nothing great. Crowder is a good chaser I'll give him that.

Damn straight he is replaceable!

If that's the case...

Why is he still here?
Why does every team not have GOOD LB's at every position?

Maybe if you would answer the following I could get a better understanding on why you feel that crowder is a horrible LB and can be replaced with EASE in one draft.

Did you play football?
How long have you watched football?
Do you know the formations on defense?
Do you know what TYPES of players it takes to run a 3-4 defense?
Would you mind posting the stats on these players than can replace him next year? Just so I can see the size, speed, smarts & play making skills that they have. Please feel free to add possible free agents & draft picks.

Otherwise...I sure am glad you are not the GM. I am GLAD your a FIN FAN...just not the GM.

This is not meant as rude by any means...just chatting with ya...
