MERGEDX2: Should Dolphins extend Chad Pennington’s contract?

I don't see why we should. Why not make him play and stay healthy before we extend him. What's the worst thing that happens? He leaves and we start our quarterback of the future, Chad Henne?

At this point I'd say no. HIs arm isn't going to get any stronger and he's not going to be any less injury prone. Short term extensions should do the trick if and when we choose to.

I would broach the subject of re-signing as Henne's back up. He doesn't seem to have that over inflated ego and he may agree. If not, I see no reason to extend him as the starter. It's time to look to the future.

That's what I think also. I see him starting next year, and then backing up Henne for an additional two years. After that...he retires....

no we should not he will be 34 next year and then 35 the following, we should only resign him after next year if he wants a backup role

Let his current contract ride. If anyone else wants him in the meantime, we can get some chips out of them, should such an opportunity arise.

I wouldn't do it at this point. Let him work something out after next season, and/or let him be Henne's backup in a few years.

I would extend him for 2 years. I know everyone wants to see the young guy but there are no guarantees that Henne is going to be a super star. He might or he might not be. Four million dollars a year to a 33-34 year old Pennington is cheap insurance that this team doesnt fall flat on its face.

What happens if Henne surpasses him this year, wouldn't that make it a waste then. Let him play out his contract and then decide at that point if Henne is ready or Penny is still the man.

Uh. no. I love Chad for what he has done for the Phins this past year, but BP and JI have hammered out the perfect deal for him. Two years to at the helm, with a big armed rookie waiting in the wings. We dont have to worry about being on the hook for 5 years and a big bonus if Penny (not the most sturdy guy) cant stay healthy.

I think we have a great balance of win now/plan for the future here.

No. Penny needs to finish out his current contract. By that time the team should know if Chad Henne is ready to take the reigns of the Dolphins offense. You don't want to pay Chad starter money when he's or backup. Or pay him backup money when he's a starter. Let the current contract ride out.
