The Dolphins are expected to keep second-round pick Phillip Merling at his college position, defensive end.

It kills his IDP potential, but Merling is well suited to be a stout, blocker occupying run-plugger in a 3-4. He will battle Rodrique Wright and Matt Roth to start at right end. Roth is the incumbent there and likely the favorite.

dammit dont the phins care about our fantasy teams lol

If that's the position that he's best suited for i have no problem with it. The front office made a serious attempt to fix the problems on both sides of the line through the draft which is something to be happy about.

Jeez... are we gonna have a serious rotation going on at DE or what? Merling, Roth, Wright, Holliday, Langford, Starks...

Well they said Starks would rotate at T and DE earlier, I actually think Starks will be given a chance to be our future NT.

the part I don't get is Roth at RDE....he's always played on the left side and I believe that Holliday have played just about everywhere....Either way there's gonna be good competition on that line.

Ozzy rules!!

we are stacked at d-line. I mean we are gonna have constant rotation at lineman which is gonna give pressure non-stop on opposing quarterbacks. So for brady and edwards while there line is tired our line well be fresh and ready at crucial points in the game.

I am almost positive that Merling will be asked to be an OLB. He has too many skills to be used as a DE. Ireland even made special mention of his pass rush abilities. Look for him to be groomed to replace Jason Taylor

Nah, Im almost positive he will play OLB, but I may be proven wrong.

He is considered a premier run defender at the DE position. That is what is needed in the 3-4. The OLB in the 3-4 are your speed pass rushers. And Merling does not fit that role. He is the long term answer at RDE. Starks is the long term answer at LDE. The team will try to bulk Langford up 10-15 lbs, and he'll be the future at NT.

Purely specualtion. No one, including the coaching staff know exactly where every player will fit. It's only April.

Ummm...as tall as Langford is, he'll need to add about 30-40 lbs. to have a prayer at NT. The more likely scenario is that Langford is the long term answer at LDE and that Starks adds the 10-15 lbs. to be the future at NT.

I am happy that there will be a competition at DE to determine the two starters. This type of competition is key to developing a good rotation. I am confident that we have enough depth at NT and DE to last the entire season without a serious weakness at the first level. My only concern in the front seven is ILB.
