• Though the Dolphins declined to say last week how the proposed stadium upgrades, including a metal roof, would be paid for, owner Stephen Ross -- when asked during the season if Miami-Dade County would need to pitch in -- said yes. ``We can't afford it,'' he said. But Miami-Dade County commissioner Carlos Gimenez said Friday he doesn't believe hosting Super Bowls matters much to most citizens here: ``It's going to be very difficult for Miami-Dade to contribute. Our tourist taxes are stretched to the limit with the baseball stadium.''

What should have happened was the Phins getting the new stadium and the Marlins taking over Dolphins stadium. It sucks to see all these nice venues and then going to Dolphins stadium which is aging and lacking in many areas.

I am not a citizen any more, but as a fan i much rather watch our dolphins be at the Superbowl I can care less about hosting it. He is completely right. The owner needs to focus on getting more citizens of south Florida to watch the game and make regular home season advantage. I find it disheartening that most of the time when watching the game on TV I see so many open spaces and TOO many Jets fans. I can care less where the **** the Superbowl is played at, plus tickets for super bowls are freaking insane. Focus on making the fans base happy and do everything you can to fill the seats with DOL FANS!

well I for say the dolphins should move to London so they can get enough fan attendence to pay for things . or buy a aircraft carrier and put the stadium on that and then when huricane season rolls around the team can hit the high seas.

the beauty of this idea is that we would be helping Mr Obama and the national debt and saving our franchize all in one big swoop.

I wonder if the NFL is making Tampa Bay put a roof over their stadium. Goodell must have a thing out against Miami. Probably trying to bankrupt the county.

just another example to add to the list of why s. florida dont care about the dolphins.

i could care less about hosting super bowls.the only benefit of it for the fins if they actually make it one year and its in miami it would be a home game. sadly there would still be more fans of the opposing team there.

It could be the reason why Ross has woken up and realized what Huizenga failed to realize or just flat out didn't care about...that the citizens of Miami are predominantly hispanic and he needed to start marketing to them by adding the Spanish reporters/commentators etc. to the DOlphin website.

So Ross needs to continue to target the hispanics and maybe the commissioner will change his mind. He probably assumes hispanics like baseball better than football and caters to them more? Unless, he is just a biased hater and loves baseball so much that he doesn't want to help football out, he did mention "we are spending money on baseball already". :ponder:

As much as I agree the city NEEDS events like this period. The local businesses, the hotel industry, the restaurants all get tremendous business in the week before and after the superbowl. It is a must to continue to host the event.

What should have happened was the Phins getting the new stadium and the Marlins taking over Dolphins stadium. It sucks to see all these nice venues and then going to Dolphins stadium which is aging and lacking in many areas.

What needs to happen is the two billionaires and 5 millionaires that currently own the team need to pay for the renovations or build a new stadium themselves.

Just playing Devil's Advocate her guys, but wouldn't a half cent sales tax increase be worth locking up the Dolphins in South Florida for 30 years? I know up here in Tampa that is the increase we saw to our sales tax to build Pirate Land!

Actually I have a problem rewarding one to the Marlins though! Even with 2 World Series they don't generate near the attendance or revenue to make it worth while.

The Superbowl brings $$$ though.

The economic impact is minimal though. January/February is one of the better tourist seasons anyways. Hotels are booked pretty good. Tourist dollars come in anyhow.

You can't take the same measuring bar for a superbowl played in Detroit or in Miami.

Why cant Steven Ross worry bout spending money to get this team to make Super Bowls!!! instead of worrying bout hosting super bowls ....
