Not sure if this has been posted,

PALM BEACH - Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga cringed when asked about the contract he'll likely have to approve to sign the No. 1 pick in this month's draft.

But Huizenga stressed his annoyance has more to do with the level of risk associated with drafting so high than the financial commitment needed to sign the player, who could demand a contract worth more than $60 million, with about $32 million guaranteed.

"Just like it's important to get the right guy, it's just as important not to make a mistake," Huizenga said.

Thats alot of money if the guy turns out to be a bust!!! :shakeno: :boohoo:

Which is why our FO is dying to trade down and conversely why no one wants to move up.

yeah pretty much, rookie salaries are getting way out hand. I am hoping this year is the max their willing go with rookie contracts. That's why Chris Long should be our pick he is the only one worth it or is safe pick.

I always wonder who the hell comes up with these numbers,The guys have not played a single game in the nfl.

The whole rookie contract thing is a joke. I have no idea how the veteran players put up with it as they are they guys who have proven their worth and they should be getting the big $$$.

JaMarcus Russell gets more than Tom Brady ( i think from memory) total nonsense.

I agree 100%, I dont know why the NFL doenst change the price that it takes for rookies to join a team.

I say give them 5 million guaranteed, then over the next 3 years if they've proven themselves elevate their base salary and give them another 10-15 million on top of it.

I know if I was a rookie I'd be happy as a pig in .... to get $5 mill up front!
The NFL has pampered top end rookies for too long, its almost sickening to see a rookie demand top dollar. Oh well, thats America for you.

The agents are becoming verrrry rich on the system that is in place. You know they will fight any changes as will the players association.

This is part of the looming 2009/2010 potential strike...

The rookie salary structure needs to be changed ASAP! The top pick in the draft was once a prized possesion and it has turned into a curse.

Every year the agent for the #1 pick is looking for a contract that is 10-20% higher than the year before. That's why these contracts are skyrocketing. If the players union was smart they would have a fixed number the rookies would have to sign for. That would leave more money for the veterans.

i think we all agree the system is clown shoes. screws up the cap huge. never thought i would see the day that teams would want to avoid getting the #1 pick. but so many people are getting rich from the system in place - they won't want to give that up. kinda like gas. we all know there are better economic and environmental alternatives. have been for decades. but who is gonna shutdown exxon, or texaco, or mobil, or any one of the major distributors? capitalism is in place and there is very little that can be done to stop it. going to war is a much better option than hydrogen cells, don't you think? (not sure this post is going to be allowed - but the metaphor is right on!)

The problem is it's a 'Catch 22' for the Players Union. They dont want rookies to make less money, but it hurts the verteran players because franchises cant afford to pay them as much as they're worth.

Sadly, I think these large rookie contracts stem from the ole USFL days when the NFL had to compete to get the best players to sign. A change is def needed, would save teams A LOT of money on the cap.

It is but it shoudln't be a 'catch 22'.
They make it such.

Logic demands that players that have proven nothing on the next level shoudn't be paid anywhere near the top players that have proven themselves at that next level.

The whole thing is absurd.

Than again sports salaries in general have become absurd so go figure.

There definitley needs to be some kind of cap set for rookie contracts. And the big money should ALL be incintive based. He the player turns out to be a bust, he does not get paid all that money. There should be no GUARANTEED money.
