Miami Dolphin Team Needs (article)

Pretty nice article. I think Sims would be a nice pick.

A couple of nits: Jeno James was signed two years ago - not last year. And we didn't lose our 5th rounder in a trade - it was the supplemental draft...

You beat me to it. JJ has been here since 03, I also don't think OL in nearly as big a concern as everyone is making it out to be. We were top 5 in the league last year protecting the QB and our RBs averaged 4.4 per carry. We have all of them back and have added LJ and Wade can maybe start at center. We will be fine at OL, we need a 3rd WR more than OL in my opinion.
We need another CB or OLB in the 1st and a saftey on the first day. I would like to resign Lance to play saftey. Also if we sign Lavar we won't need another LB. We need to get that done before the draft or we need to draft one. On the other hand if no one picks up Lavar before the draft and then all of our competition for him drafts a young LB then his price will be forced down. Just food for thought.

Actually we had two 5th round picks. We used one on Manny Wright in the supplemental draft. The other pick was lost under one of those "future conditional" picks. I do not know the player involved.

You're right, but I think we need a good WR more than another CB

Offensive Tackle is not a need, Guard/Center is.

Linebacker is not a greater need than either Safety or Cornerback.

Where is Wide Receiver on that list?

My list would be

1)Safety
2)Corner
3)Wide Receiver
4)Linebacker
5)Guard or Center

With very little difference between 1 and 5. To be honest, none of these are needs. Quarterback was a need, but that's been taken care of. The FA acquisitions have mostly taken care of the secondary, though we could use more talent there. The OL was pretty decent last year, but could become an elite unit if we were to replace Seth McKinney with a guy like Nick Mangold. We need a 3rd WR who can eventually replace Booker, and some LB depth. We're a playoff team and probable Superbowl contenders even before this draft.

Well, after saying we needed to work on the QB spot, coach Saban addressed the o-line as needing help as our second priority. We've already worked on the o-line some...signed Shelton, signed a blocking tight end to release McMike into patterns, and signed a blocking fullback. The figures you quoted came at a price and I think Saban is trying to address that.

on the 4.4 yards per carry. Our backs at least half the time were getting whacked a full yard deep in the back field. We were unable to sell the two back set because by the time you faked to one the defender was disrupting the damned handoff. I believe that 4.4 number was the result of great backs behind an adequate line. If Hud can replicate for our backs what he did for Emmit....<whistles> it sure is gunna be fun.

Hmmm... If I go to http://www.miamidolphins.com/history/alltimetrades/alltimetrades8.asp#2000 and look at all trades from 2000-2005, the only thing that comes up for 2006 is:

08/25/03
S Scott McGarrahan to Green Bay for conditional 7th round pick in 2006
09/05/04
G Brad Bedell to Green Bay for an undisclosed 2006 pick

That would explain our 2 extra 7th rounders from GB and Chicago (via GB?) I guess.

The ESPN Draft Tracker says for Round 5 that the only trades are #136 New England from Oakland and #152 Cleveland from New England...

Or at least a conditional one - that would explain it. Thanks!

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (Aug. 29, 2005) -- The Miami Dolphins traded linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, a Pro Bowl alternate on special teams last season, to the Chicago Bears for tight end John Owens and a conditional draft pick.

It just looks like the miamidolphins.com site hasn't updated any trade info since the Surtain trade. Searching through the news articles, I found other trades since then, but nothing about our other 5th rounder.

Dolphins Acquire CB Kris Richard From Seattle For DE Ronald Flemons

The Miami Dolphins today acquired quarterback Cleo Lemon from the San Diego Chargers in exchange for quarterback A.J. Feeley and an undisclosed 2006 draft choice.

The Miami Dolphins today acquired a future conditional draft choice from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for running back Jesse Chatman

And, of course:

The Miami Dolphins today acquired seven-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowl quarterback quarterback Daunte Culpepper from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a second-round draft choice in 2006 (19th pick in round, 51st overall).

Ernie Simms would be great, he's about as gifted physcially as any OLB in the whole league

Just read the article, and I don't really agree with much at all with what was written.

Don't think we need to address the OL as badly as he said, and our OL did a very good job last year, even though the author said we did a bad job.

Don't think we need to address DT this year, but it will be a priority next year.

There was no mention about the WR spot, either.
