The Miami Dolphins have to manage injury issues this season, there is no getting around that, we all know that. But one of the more frustrating parts about the injuries that have befallen the team this preseason is their lasting aftermath.
The injuries, you see, will do more than hurt the team’s chances in 2017. The injuries promise to bleed into next season and affect significant decision for 2018.

We have A LOT of free agents next year due to the one year deals but only a couple that are high priority re-signs, IMO. The two I highlighted plus one of the two safeties and maybe Matt Moore (and a long snapper).

It still leaves many many snaps to replace. I don't know how anyone in there right mind lets Landry walk out the door. I think Hayes will be re-signed on a decent deal.

I'm not a big fan of mando but right is right. I have to agree with everything he said on that article. We're going into 2018 with a lot of the same questions we came into 2017 with. And he didn't even mention the two lines. I know we've heard good things about the two rookie DT's but we'll have to wait and see once the season starts. And the o-line? Questions all over the place there too. I'm hoping for the best but at this point we just don't know.

Ozzy rules!!

Does it seem like there's an overreaction to the injuries? Yes, Miami's been hit pretty hard. The truth is most teams will lose a couple of starters during the course of the season.

At the very least, the Dolphins injuries have hit early. If they continue, then there's a real problem. But if you're a good team you've got to overcome some injuries.

I hope 2016 isn't the high point of this group of Dolphins, like 2008 was under Sparano. Are we an up and coming team that promises to improve under Gase every year, or was 2016 actually the peak before bottoming out for the foreseeable future due to key injuries, QB questions, salary cap issues, etc...?

Oh please mando teams bet on projections all the time. It's why if they end up like we are now they look for stop gaps and not long term replacements.

Miamis doing it at qb, they are doing it at mike, and they will do it at boundary corner also

I added a couple to your list, but only on contingencies...McDonald or Verner, if they have good years could but good to resign at a reasonable rate. Williams knows our system, the coaches seem to like him, he's a good receiver back, and the least injured of our top 3 guys... i bet we try to retain him. I'd like to see if maybe Aikens can fill the role of Michael Thomas (special teams mainly, but reserve safety/cb)- he wont be expensive to resign. If Nate Allen doesn't get abused out there, I could see use bringing him back to get some consistency back there that we haven't had for awhile. We desperately need to draft a young guy with range and ability to be a true fs.

This teams betting on Raekwon at mike in 2018 already. They aren't gonna use a high pick to draft a replacement a year later. The good news is Timmons is signed thru next year Miami will get 2018 with Raekwon to see if he can stay healthy and get the job done. Only way they are gonna invest a high pick in 2019 in mike lb is if he can't. There's a rule of thumb here that applies just about universally.

And if x plays like a 1 and cordrea looks like he can be top 3 worthy in 2018 boundary I'd cut maxwell and bet on lippett returning as a top 3 also going into a contract year. But bottom line here with maxwell is you weigh the salary relative to the free agent market and what you have in house. Teams do it every year.

They are making way too much of this frankly.

Same for the qb only way tanny is t coming back as plan a for 2018 is if the medical says he's not gonna be a go in 2018 and the odds of them finding that out predraft are low but if they do I could see Miami making a top pick qb. Otherwise it will be 2019 before Miami would consider it

Mandos betting on a dumb audience here

I did mention a decision on "one of the two safeties" but as far as Williams goes, he wants to get paid and I'm not sure that's feasible in Miami. He was squabbling over his 1.8M this season which is more than Jarvis Landry, Ajayi or Ted Larsen is making this year.

I've given up on Aikens as anything more than a ST player but yes he can be re-signed on the cheap.

A few other contingencies are...

...Lawrence Timmons and how he performs this year. If he is truly in decline, then we are locked into his salary but will still need to replace him. We are paying him 7.25M regardless unless he is a post June cut.

If Mike Pouncey has another injury plagued year, he will be gone as we pick up 7M with his release. (2 mil dead cap) That opens another hole.

I agree. No one on that list outside of Landry and MAYBE Hayes and McDonald (depending on how they do this season) is a must re-sign. There's plenty of money that can be freed up.

Add to the situation of 2018 these players cap
hits will increase over 2017

Suh's cap hit goes up by $7 million next season over this one
Jones's cap hit goes up $7.8 million
Maxwell's goes up $1.5 million
Thomas's cap hit goes up $1 million
Stills goes up $6 million
Alonso's goes up 6.8 million
Branch goes up $5 million
Timmons goes up $4.4 million
James goes up $6.6 million

An increase of cap numbers of over $46 million dollars
in 2017 to 2018 That doesn't include all players we'll need to resign or replace

2018 will be a problem in Miami
this team may look very different than it does today

I don't really think it frees anything up when you consider most are not even on the books for next year as well as the rising salaries of many players. We are not in a good situation for 2018 according to the conflicting information given on spotrac and OTC. One says we have 3M in surplus and the other says we are 11.7M over the cap.

We will almost have to cut players like Byron Maxwell & Julius Thomas. They will also have to make a decision on J. James to either lower his number with an extension or cut him.

It really makes me wonder what in the heck they are doing in the front office in regards to contracts. It seems to have gone downhill since Aponte left. I don't even see how they keep Jarvis Landry. Why did they extend Alonso when they didn't have to and ignore Landry? Also why so much guaranteed money to Branch & Timmons? Should Branch really be the 5th highest paid player on this team? He's certainly not the 5th best player or oven close.

The only players that can be manageable cuts with little dead cap hits are Wake, Pouncey, Tannehill, Maxwell, James &Thomas. Sheeesh. Not sure what I'm missing here in the grand scheme.
