Defense is clearly our achilles heel on this team; and to be more specific, our pass coverage is where we lose our games. It is very easy to predict which teams we will struggle against. If we are playing a team with at least two very good WRs, the odds are against us in winning that game. It's been that way for at least the last two years. Personally, I think we have pretty good personel on the defensive side, but my #1 reason (among a few others) I believe they are struggling is PAUL PASQUALONI.
I know we are all sick and tired of watching our team get torched through the air in the fourth quarter. Countless times of watching us blow a lead in the fourth quarter because we given up big plays in the air. Pasqualoni's scheme has puzzled me all season long. I don't put all the blame on Pasq alone because our players have to make some plays too; but there are more than a few occassions when Pasq play-calling has put our players in bad positions during key situations.
He has to realize a major weakness on the defense is the inexperience of our CBs. Our CBs are going to be the cornerstone of our secondary in the near future, but they are still rookies and they should not be lined up man to man against some the most dominant WRs in the NFL the entire game, especially when the game is on the line and we know they will be throwing to these guys in the fourth quarter. They have been up against the best passing offenses in the league (Indy, New Orleans, San Diego, New England, and Atlanta) which were all loses. I left Buffalo out of the best passing offenses, but they still have two dominant WRs (which applies to my theory) in T.O. and Lee Evans.
Personally, I think we have pretty good personel on defense, and they should be performing better than advertised, but I put the blame on Pasq and his schemes. Although there are still some tweaking to be done with the linebacking corp and the safety position, but overall we are still in very good shape. The bottom line is...we need better decision making from our defensive coordinator. IMO...Pasqualoni needs to go, the sooner the better.
Now as far as tweaking the LB and S positions. We need youth at the OLB position, hopefully Cameron Wake can take his game to the next level, and we need one high draft pick (Rolando McClain or Brandon Spikes) to be used at the ILB positions. I would also like to see us acquire Kansas City LB Derrick Johnson, he is disgruntled with the new coach and I think he will be looking for a new home next year. If we can pick him up, we can focus that high draft pick on another position in need.
One thing that is fortunate for us is the safety position will probably be the deepest position in the draft next year. I see 16-18 quality safeties in the draft this year, so we should be able to hit on one or two of them in the mid to late rounds, maybe even an undrafted FA.
