Whereas the Dolphins’ offense has no major concerns aside from perhaps guard and very few unresolved issues, the same – regrettably – cannot be said about Miami’s maligned defense.
The acquisitions of Lawrence Timmons, William Hayes and Nate Allen should make you feel a little bit better about a Dolphins defense that gave up the most yards in franchise history, ranked 29th overall and finished 30th against the run.

But that’s like feeling a little better when you discover that the chance of rain during your beach vacation has diminished from 90 percent to 70 percent.

If they could simply improve on the Run-D that will help out big time.

Honestly, it's time for Phillips to step up. The guy has no excuses to underperform this season.

We have done very little in free agency to improve our defense. Signing a mediocre safety in Nate Allen and 2 past their prime players in Hayes and Timmons is not going to get it done.

if they can get 2 starters, plus with our free agent signings, should show improvement not expecting to jump into top 10 in defense in one offseason, if we can get into the middle of the league in defense I will be happy with that,

Funny we seem to be a team that thinks we need backups when much of the starters arent even backup material.. seen it for to long to be fooled any more 17 years seems to be enough time to understand reality...........

If Miami fails to add 2-3 defensive playmakers in this draft, they'll have no one to blame but themselves. The talent is there to be had. Phillips should improve; Timmons and Hayes should help against the run; and Miami should add speed and talent at every level (ranging part-time to full-time) of the defense. For a team that needs help at pass rusher and in the secondary, the 2017 Draft should be like rain in the desert.

This is the witching hour for Mike Tannenbaum and this FO. If they miss out on premium defensive talent while the rest of the league stocks up, particularly because the needs are so apparent for Miami, it will set the franchise back years. If Miami is able to take advantage of this loaded group, they'll take a significant step forward.

I disagree. We sit a good position defensively before the draft. Now we may not be a top ten defense, but hey going form 29th to 15th is possible. Couple of more reasons for optimism:

1. Jones returns from his injury. Huge to have arguably the best safety back in the fold.
2. A Healthy Kiko Alonzo.
3. Not having Paysinger in the starting lineup.
4. A more experienced secondary still growing (Howard and Lippett).
5. A chance the "light" goes on for Phillips.

Just wish we had shored up the Guard position and then we could have focused solely on defense. Now its LB/DE round 1; Guard round 2; LB/DE/safety round 3.

We need game changers bro along with depth behind them that isn't such a huge drop off if they get called into the game. The players must push each other to be better rather than just wearing a jersey on Sunday.

I'm a big fan of Barry Jackson and very happy to have him reporting on the Dolphins, because he's honest, accurate and just plain good. I'm also an optimist, who has been accused of wearing aqua-colored glasses from time to time. But, I have to say, our defensive situation is worse than shown in that article.

The acquisition of Timmons and Allen does NOT make me feel better. OK, I am happy we added Mermaid-man Hayes despite his somewhat disturbing viewpoints. Hayes can play. He had as many sacks as our supposed pass rusher Branch, and Hayes is legitimately good against the run. But Timmons is over the hill. He was never good as a coverage LB, meaning he shouldn't play in the nickel. That's over 50% of the snaps where he will be exploited or out of the game ... and we guaranteed 11M of his 12M salary over two years. IMHO, that is the worst move of our free agency and it will bite us in the arse. Allen, cheap, we'll see.

Branch, well I understand rewarding a guy when he proves it in a prove it year contract. But, with a DL that includes double-teamed Wake and unblockable Suh giving you 1v1 on the blind side every passing down ... and you only get 5.5 sacks. Is that really proving it? Branch was also atrocious against the run. And we paid him more than Jabaal Sheard ... which to me seems like we overpaid.

Going into free agency everyone saw the draft talent, and every scout said the same things ... phenomenal talent at pass rusher both at LB and DE. Exceptionally deep LB class. Good DE class. Fantastically deep CB and S class. Possibly the best TE class of all times. And, very poor G and T class.

So, it seemed like a no-brainer, keep Albert and add 1 free agent guard, or move on from Albert and get 2 solid free agent guards. Because honestly, everything else is available in the draft. Then, take bargains, like Hayes, and re-sign our guys like Reshad Jones, Kenny Stills, and Jarvis Landry before his contract year. But we did too many other things. Yes, we did Hayes, Reshad and Stills deals, and those were all good (although we sure did pay a lot for an old safety who has a lot of years on his deal).

But before we back up the Brinks truck to a 30 year old LB who has dramatically declined the last two years and barfed on the field in Miami last year (Timmons), maybe we should have seen if we could get a LB in the draft? That's a very gettable position this year. So we signed one guy to play MLB who couldn't ever cover, and the last couple of years has lost his run defending prowess. Then we shored that up by re-signing Branch who was a very poor run defender and mediocre pass rusher. This is supposed to make me feel better?

Great TE draft, so instead, we added a super-injury-proned TE who doesn't block and quits on his team. Great LB draft, so instead we signed a guy well past his prime with obvious signs of decline. Good DE draft so we re-signed a guy who didn't stop the run and only got 5.5 sacks on a line with 2 guys that are arguably All-Pro. Terrible guard draft, so we double-down on the draft by now needing 2 starting guards. (Ted Larsen is not quality IMHO).

This is the sort of thing that made people rage about Tannenbaum in New York. Painting us into a corner to either A) bypass the exceptional edge rush, DB, LB and TE talent in this draft to pick two G's from a subpar class, or B) burn cap to stuff veterans in front of top talent we will draft on defense while we leave two gaping holes at guard preventing Ajayi from running up the middle and ensuring that Tannehill is constantly running for his life from A-gap pressure. Ummmmmm, this isn't very smart.

Yes, this approach has me frustrated.

I'm with you Digital. I would have spent on a guard and nailed that need down in a big way. But, I also trust the process a little more with Adam Gase as the head coach.

I do think the draft is set up perfectly to help Miami. That said, I do think the Dolphins need to spend one high draft pick on an offensive lineman. I think the second round is where the value falls there. Not sure the team can wait until round three and find an instant starter.

Other than that, it would be all defense for me and maybe a late round tight end.

Quit ****ing around with Brown and sign him to a contract that is more than the 3-4 million **** show you offered to Poe.

Do that and draft DE, S, and G.

So true. Fans tend to forget that teams are not operating in a vacuum. Miami could add talent, but if the teams around them add more there really is no net gain.

It always seems like the team is at a crossroads, but I think that has a lot to do with the salary capped NFL. You've got to be able to put a team together quicker than in the past. That will be the test for this front office.

I also wonder if Hankins is a possibility. I've read that Miami has about $16.5 million so they certainly can fit in another good player and have money for draft picks.
