The Jets still have an outside shot at the playoffs despite losing their past two games to drop to 8-7. They need to win Sunday and (bear with us) Cincinnati, Tennessee and Denver or Oakland must lose.
Of course, the Dolphins (5-10) could simplify matters by beating the Jets in the season finale at Sun Life Stadium, which would be a nice treat for the fans who endured Miami's 0-7 start this season.
But the Dolphins might be significantly short-handed. Left tackle Jake Long, who left Saturday's loss to New England because of a right arm injury, has a torn biceps, according to ESPN, and likely won't play Sunday.
Long, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2008, has suffered a series of injuries the past two seasons. He has hurt both knees (one of which required him to begin 2011 training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list); had shoulder surgery in January; and missed the first game of his career Dec. 18 because of a lower back injury.
Missing that game, against Buffalo, snapped his streak of 61 consecutive starts. He returned to the lineup Saturday but lasted less than a quarter.
The Dolphins also lost cornerback Vontae Davis to an elbow injury in the second half and played without tight end Anthony Fasano, still recovering from a concussion.
The Jets' playoff hopes aren't the only thing at stake Sunday. So is the Dolphins' draft positioning.
As of Sunday afternoon, the Dolphins held the No. 8 pick, behind several quarterback-needy teams - Indianapolis (first), Cleveland (fourth) and Washington (seventh) - but ahead of Kansas City (11th) and Seattle (14th).
With a win, the Dolphins likely would pick in the Nos. 8-10 range. With a loss, they could jump as high as No. 5 but likely would be in the Nos. 6-8 range.
