Steelers receiver Antonio Brown barely touches the sideline on the final play of the game, which negated what would have been a last-second winning touchdown for Pittsburgh. ‘I thought I had it clean,’ Brown said. Don Wright / AP

[h=3]bjackson@MiamiHerald.com[/h] Even if Antonio Brown hadn’t stepped out of bounds at the Dolphins’ 12-yard-line on Pittsburgh’s final play Sunday, defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said Monday the Steelers committed two penalties that should have nullified the play even if a miraculous touchdown had been scored.
“The offense was not set, so the play should never have started to begin with,” Coyle said. “One of their receivers was still moving to get aligned, and the play went off.”
Also, Coyle said Ben Roethlisberger threw an illegal forward pass to Brown, “but not by much. Looking at the television copy, it looked like the ball was a little bit ahead.”
If Brown caught the ball beyond the point that Roethlisberger threw it — and replays suggested he did — then that should have been a penalty, thus ending the game.
Coach Joe Philbin said the referees had the authority to review that aspect of the play, but did not because they had already determined Brown had stepped out of bounds.
Asked what he would advise his players to do differently in that situation, Coyle said: “You have to tackle the first guy that catches the ball. That usually helps. We have to tackle and get them on the ground sooner. We had chances. The footing didn’t help. But that’s not an excuse.
“At one point, it looked like we were kids in the school yard playing keep away. Guys were looking around looking at who the ball might be going to next as opposed to who actually had the ball. It looked like a rugby game. The only thing missing was the band.”
Coyle was referring to the 1982 California-Stanford game, which ended with Cal scoring a touchdown after five laterals. Stanford band members came on the field during the play.
• Coyle said “the question has come up about whether it’s best to take a time out in that situation.” The Dolphins chose not to because “it’s very shaky you can get a play off with the amount of time left on the clock.”
• One problem on that play from a Dolphins perspective is “we had guys still running to get back in position. There were two laterals on the play before, so guys were dispersed all over the field and not in a normal position.”
• What was Philbin thinking during that play? “I might have been saying a couple of Hail Mary’s, a couple of Our Father’s. I know my mother probably was, wherever she was.”
What was Coyle thinking? “I was trying to be calm. As the banter was going on, I was saying, ‘We got him! We got him! [Pause] ‘I don’t know if we got him!’
“When he accelerated, he was flying. It was definitely scary.”

Unbelievable, all that play needed was some little cars with clowns driving around the field and circus music playing over the speakers..

I think the coaches missed protesting the fact that 2 plays earlier O.V. and Cameron Wake Sacked Ben R. and caused a fumble and recovered it and the idiotic refs screwed us again.

The refs have turned the NFL into college basketball. Only making calls for the teams that are the darlings of the league.

It makes me sick - and I guarantee that had that Steeler not stepped out of bounds the refs would have given the Steelers the W and then apologized for their mistakes. That is SOOOO pathetic!!!

I would say once the circus act begins ( the laterals) plant the fast guy on the field! Perfectly legal just drill him take him out if equation?

Correct!!! Until the Dolphins fill up stadiums nobody wants us in the playoff. We dont have a big enough fan base for anyone to want us to barely make in the playoffs.

We have a great fan base, unfortunately most of us live outside the S. Florida area.

And how many games have you gone to this year?

I bet there are more Dolfans in the South Florida area that spend hard earned money going to games and buying gear and paying for parking and tailgating than where you are at.

Don't generalize the South Florida area for not having "great fans" . . . there are fantastic fans in the area.

Just for kicks, pittsburgh's attendance is below the dolphins this year.

Dolphins are averaging just over 62,000 in attendance this year. Dolfans have picked up this year, compared to last year. I think the fans get a bad rap because they are late getting to their seats and then they disappear at halftime, so the stadium looks bare at times. We just need that extra 10,000 fans to show up for the next two games to make it a full house. I think the playoff race, cooler weather, and games against jets and pats will fill it up.

I think the point he was trying to make is despite the years of losing, the Dolphins still have a very strong national fanbase. Not on the level that the Steelers, Cowboys, and 49ers have, but I still see Dolphin fans everywhere in this state.

Dolphins have always had great fans around the country. No disputing that, but why take a shot at the local fans like they aren't apart of being "great fans"? It gets real old . . . and many of the fans you see at these stadiums across the country make the trip from South Florida to the games. Trust me, I meet them all the time while tailgating before a Fins game.

I'd almost guarantee you there are more Dolphins fans outside of Florida than there are in it. 49 states to 1? Of course.

Reading comprehension helps... not once did I criticize S. Florida fans. I just said there are many more fans outside the state of Florida. After the Pittsburgh game while walking through Target in Atlanta a couple was all decked out in Dolphin gear. I've been to a few road games that I can drive to and the amount of Dolphin fans are absolutely crazy. In Arizona on that crazy Monday night game against San Diego the whole stadium was filled with Dolphin fans. It was the closest to a home game that I have seen on the road.

I'm glad S. Florida has great fans and if I lived there I would be at every game.

Look, I don't give a **** if the fans in South Florida are 'great', 'not great', 'suck', 'don't suck' or whatever... All I know is the fans in South Florida need to get their asses down to JRS on Sunday, pack the place, and yell their ****ing faces off. That's it. End of story.
