CARLSBAD, Calif. — Since joining the Miami Dolphins in 2009, defensive end Cameron Wake has had five different head coaches.
Adam Gase is different.
Speaking after Sunday’s upset at San Diego, Wake laid out the top two reasons why:
•GASE COACHES WITH ENTHUSIASM. “He is a guy with a lot of passion. He is very fired up, especially on the offensive side. We’re the stepchildren on defense. But don’t tell him I said that. But the passion is there. And the guys know that when you have a guy that’s passionate about playing and passionate about winning, it’s easy to rally the troops.”
•GASE RELATES TO THE PLAYERS. “Guys go out and play for him. We play for each other. It’s really easy to play for a guy like that. He’s on the sideline. I’m sure you guys have seen him. He’s all over the place. F-Bombs here. It’s fun. He’s a guy’s guy. And he’s one of the fellas out there on coaching side of the ball. And I’ve been enjoying every minute of it, to be honest.
Wake, 34, has six sacks in four games since regaining his starting position.
Wake is also a big fan of first-year defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.
JOSEPH KNOWS PLAYER STRENGTHS. “What I really enjoy about him is he’s a guy that’s knows his personnel. When the hammer is needed, you use the hammer. When the nail is needed, you use the nail. The way our defense is set up, there are a lot of guys that can make plays.”
JOSEPH HAS AN AGGRESSIVE APPROACH. “He lets us go. He lets us attack. That’s been our motto is attack, attack, attack. We’re not going to sit back and hope or prevent. We’re going to go force. I love it. And I know the other guys love it the same. He’s been putting guys in a position to make plays.”
