The Dolphins secondary, not particularly good to start the season, could have been an unmitigated disaster after losing Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones and rookie cornerback Xavien Howard.

The fact it hasn’t ranks among the delightful surprises of this ongoing six-game Dolphins winning streak.
The Dolphins are surviving with a safety (Bacarri Rambo) who was filling out job applications to work at a car dealership in October, a cornerback (Tony Lippett) who was playing receiver in college two years ago, another cornerback (Byron Maxwell) who was so awful that he was benched three weeks into the season and several others — led by safety Isa Abdul-Quddus — who have kept the secondary from malfunctioning despite losing its best player in Jones.

I'm not sure this is the week and team we are facing to have put out this article. Hopefully I'm very wrong about that.

It is not Baltimore's offense that I am particularly worried about. I hope I am not wrong.

Not surprising to me. Since the draft, I've been saying that LB is the biggest concern on D and that we don't currently have the players to make VJ's system work as well as it can. VJ's D makes life for CB's relatively easy (nothing is "easy" at the NFL level). It's the same reason I didn't really want a CB in the 1st. Howard, when healthy, has looked even better than anticipated. Thankfully, Kiko has surpassed expectations, but if Miami adds a stud LB or two to this D, we'll see the unit take a big step forward.

We need a premiere slot CB too... We are getting killled by slot WR's

i think we need to sure up our pass rush which can be done thru the DE or LB position

Maxwell has played good this year.

Surprisingly good.

Not much of a surprise to me. He FITS our system perfectly.

STRENGTHS
Maxwell is a big corner that can run. Delivers a strong press at the line to reroute receivers and has the burst to close when the ball is in the air. Shows good instincts in zone coverage and has the ball skills to make interceptions. Aggressive in run support, sheds effectively and is a solid tackler.
WEAKNESSES
Lacks the hip fluidity to maintain his speed in transition and will not be able to stick in man coverage. Does not have the instincts to anticipate routes and overcome his lack of agility in man. Takes poor angles at times in run support and struggles to break down ball carriers in the open field.

Strange article considering the 1-10 49ers just ran and passed on our D at will.

Strange response considering that the article isn't about one game.

Well let's hope the defense does better against the Ravens but a top ten points allowed defense will be more of a pleasant surprise than the ones that "showed" against Cleveland, Tennessee and Ssn Fran.

The CB version of Jarvis Landry: Desmond King. No.14 from Iowa will need a new number in Miami

I love this kid. I am not sure I'd take him in the first round depending on where we are slotted. Definitely someone I'd love to move up with a 2nd round pick to grab if he's available.

We gotta keep steve Smith from getting under the defenses skin. We need to be chippy, but not getting penalties.

Maxwell has played better in coverage, Rambo's range and smarts at FS has helped in that aspect tremendously.

What's severely lacking in Maxwell's game is run defense. When he played in Seattle's Cover 1 & 3, the SS was the primary run defender in the secondary. In VJ's Cover 2 press the CBs are the primary run defenders. That is in area he must pick up in, especially if we are to make a run for and into the playoffs.
