The longest weather-related delay in Dolphins history did more than extend the playing time of Thursday's pre-season game in Tampa to almost midnight.
"It gave the coaches a chance to yell at us once when we came in for the storm, and again at halftime," linebacker Channing Crowder said.
With good reason. While Miami (3-0) did pull out a 10-6 win, both the offense and defense were outplayed for long stretches by a Tampa Bay (1-2) team expected to finish near the bottom of the NFC this season.
"It's a good wakeup call," linebacker Akin Ayodele said. "It gives us plenty to work on for the next couple weeks."
While the first-team offense led by Chad Pennington was going three-and-out on its first four possessions, the Bucs came up with one big play after another against the first-team defense, converting four of eight third-down opportunities as Byron Leftwich hit 8 of 15 passes for 96 yards in the first period alone.
Then, with 10:11 left in the second quarter, officials cleared the field because of lightning in the area. Once play resumed, the Bucs' offense never did get going again. After averaging 4.6 yards per play to that point, the Bucs averaged just 2.9 the rest of the way, were two of 10 on third-down conversions and failed to score another point.
"Once we came in, we realized how we'd been attacked, so we were able to adjust," Ayodele said.
