Throughout most of the season there was absolutely no presence of a LB. Besides Jenkins at times, it was disgusting to watch, there was nobody stepping up, filling, making plays, etc... In my opinion Wheeler just needs to GO!!! Get rid of him... but we also need to fill these voids. LB is a big hole i think for the dolphins this off season.

Agree with you re Wheeler. I hope he goes, too. Koa Misi can still play when healthy. He is better suited to the SAM than the MIKE role. Don't give up on him. Also don't forget about Jordie Tripp, our 5th round Draft pick who has the flexibility to play all linebacker roles. He was expected to be drafted in the 3rd round and he's good (Hickey got a steal). With a year of Special Teams experience under his belt, don't be surprised if he competes for a starting role after he builds up some muscle and gets bigger. He is the 3rd generation Montana LB and a team captain and very high character. Joe has a habit of making rookies sit in their first year and giving them opportunities in year 2. In the same way Jelani Jenkins improved big time last season, keep your eyes on Tripp. He has the ability to make big plays like forcing fumbles.

I know what you mean with Tripp... I've heard positive things on him, but need to see it first. But yes, I am patient and waiting to see it.

Otherwise we really dont have a leader. We dont have an instinctive player that can fill and make plays in the backfield. We dont even have guys that can get off blocks for the most part. It was a horrid year watching our LB play this year.

any thoughts in FA or Draft? I really think LB should be one of our top priorities

Tripp was not that good filling gaps and shedding blocks on ST. I just believe Hickey struck out on Tripp and Aikens. I hope Fede and Turner develop and if that's the case, he had a good draft. I kept a close eye on Tripp on ST and often rewound to see how he performed.

Tripp just isn't a starting linebacker in this league. I mean we can all have hopes that he overachieves, learns how to shed blocks and continues to play with that motor of his, but he is not somebody you rely on. If he ends up being a backup LB and a special teams ace, we will have gotten our money's worth out the kid. It is ok to draft guys on day 3 that don't end up being solidified starters . . . .this team needs depth and hopefully Tripp becomes "reliable" depth as a worse case.

Wheeler, I mean I called this guy being a joke of a signing when it first happened. A lot of people defended it, but I watched him at Georgia Tech frequently and with the Colts . . . he's a special teamer man. He offers a little in blitz packages, but he's terrible at reading and diagnosing plays, to me is a glorified pile jumper in the run game and he is god awful in coverage. Basically, a real bad fit for what we need at LB. If it's true that a post June 1st cut saves us $3 million of the $4.4 million contract . . . then come early June I don't expect Wheeler on this team.

Koa Misi, I have always liked him . . . we have literally put him everywhere and he always plays with that high motor of his and is usually a solid tackler. Definitely not an ideal fit at MLB, but out of the group we currently have, he's probably the best guy for the job. Good having a guy like him on the team.

Jelani Jenkins, I think he more than solidified his role as the WLB of this LB group. Coverage was not my concern with him when he was drafted . . . I knew he could cover guys . . . but he was just extremely active last year, proved what a solid tackler he was and was the best LB on the Dolphins roster last year. At least with him and Misi, you have 2 guys you can be "ok" with in this LB group. Certainly could be better, but definitely could be worse.

Dannell Ellerbe, not much to be said here . . . . I don't expect him on this team come early June. Post June 1st cut has the savings at $8.45 million, leaving us only $1.4 million in dead space. Getting rid of Wheeler/Ellerbe with under 3 million in dead space to boot seems like a no brainer. The guy is much better suited as a ILB in the 3-4 but again, just a truly overrated signing by Jeff Ireland. 2 huge whiffs at LB.

Kelvin Sheppard actually played decently at MLB when he was in late in the season. He's a thumper, and we need some of that with this group to help against the run and IMO would provide some decent depth at the MLB spot for this team and could start if necessary. No it's not ideal, but considering you can probably have him for dirt cheap and probably get more production out of him than Ellerbe/Wheeler . . . seems like a no brainer resign.

Chris McCain hopefully will get a chance to expand his role as a pass rusher from the LB position. He really is an X factor in this group and I look forward to seeing him next season. LOADED with potential and pops off the screen everytime he plays.

And finally, Dion Jordan. The other "X factor". I honestly would LOVE to see this guy come in leaner and healthier while continuing to improve his overall strength. He really could be like a Von Miller of this defense if he puts in the work. Not as great of a pass rusher as Miller, but when you throw in his ability in coverage, could be overall a better player. He has to want it though. I really don't know if I want to see him at DE anymore . . . just a waste IMO. Hopefully Coyle has an understanding of what to do with this kid.

In free agency, I'd definitely target Brandon Spikes. 2 things he brings right away . . . leadership on the field and top tier run stuffing ability. Not really a 3 down LB, but when you have Jordan and McCain trying to get on the field in 3rd down situations, I'm not sweating that at all. He's one of my top targets for Miami this offseason.

Overall, this group gets ALOT of misguided anger and honestly I don't believe it is bad as what others think. We were injured for a vast majority of the season and it hurt the perception of this group . . . combined with 2 overpaid Jeff Ireland signings. Ideally, yea, we need a true MLB, but IMO it's not something I'm going to overpay for or reach for in the draft. You can get away with Misi/Sheppard inside for another season but for this group to truly shine, you need Dion Jordan and Chris McCain to step up and become impact players. I look into Free Agency and see what is there but again, I don't think we are desperate for a MLB . . . also how much does Joe Philbin want to get a true MLB on this team? Can he deal with a guy who is going to be a vocal presence in the locker room and on the field . . . does he even want that? Time will tell.

well put KDawg..... Misi I agree with too. Jenkins and Misi have been doing a solid job. But Misi isnt a big time run stuffer, he doesnt shed the blocks and read well in the middle. I'd also like to spell people with Sheppard instead of having him start, but we will see on his improvements still and see what he offers in time!!!

Dion Jordan still is a work in progress yes, but he over pursues so much, and takes awful angels so often... So much knowledge and discipline for him to learn still, as well as the improvements you stated above.

FA: it would be nice to land Brandon Spikes, im 100% with you on that. Otherwise im not sure what else is out there worth while.

Bring in more youth? Draft: Denzel Perryman from Miami... great form tackler, fills holes fast with great instinct, needs work getting through the blocks more... but is a guy I like.
Eric Kendricks from UCLA ... great form tackler, flows well with the ball with solid range... a guy i like

We need difference makers. Watch Seattle linebackers and then ours. Playmakers all over the field.

For the money that we have effectively flushed down the toilet on Wheeler and Ellerbe, Ireland should be ashamed. We need a really good MIKE LB either in the Draft or in Free Agency. Other teams can find them, but we have struggled to find a decent answer really since Zach Thomas.
Zach was a bit like Dan Marino in that he fell into our lap and really spoiled Dolphin fans for many years, but ever since we have had difficulty finding a suitable replacement who can dominate. It seems that the good ones are hard to find and we need to be investing a high Draft pick in this endeavour.
In some of the players listed above we have a core to cover the other positions but I don't have a good enough answer for the MIKE role.

I like the idea of Jordan Tripp much more than I do the player I've seen on the field. Much like what we saw of him in college the performance doesn't match the ideal. I really hope things come together for him, but I haven't really seen enough to justify that possibility. At the least I really hope he works his way into a spectacular ST player and capable backup, which isn't bad for a 5th rounder in a draft that's already netted multiple starters. Wheeler cannot get off this team fast enough. I don't think we've ever had a worse 2 year starter. The Cam Worrell's and Mark Colombo's come and go, but for such a piss poor player to start 2 years on this team is extraordinary.

On the brightside, Jenkins was legitimately terrific and in a lot of ways held a tattered defensive unit together from the WLB position. McCain impresses the hell out of me. I don't understand why he doesn't play. There's rare talent to develop there. Really baffling by the coaching staff not to attempt to feature him more considering the glaring deficiencies of the LB corps.

We've been an organization with a great legacy at MLB. I think that's instilled in me the belief that a great D needs that amazing mike flying around as leader. The impact having a great mlb would have on this D would be enormous. Once we've jettisoned the anchors Ireland attached to this LB group in Wheeler/Ellerbe hopefully that frees us up to find that mike leader.

Wheeler and Ellerbe cost us several games and their contracts are 2 of the biggest blunders I've seen the fins make in years.

We need to look at LB coach also...when you have one of the worst LB cores in the league you have to look to coaching as well.

Appreciate your feedback. K-dawg, Sherif and you may be right about Jordie Tripp, but I'm expecting him to be a lot bigger and stronger than what we saw this past year. Don't be surprised if he turns out to be good. I suspect that the plan was always for him to just play Special Teams and then see what he can do. Part of the risk in drafting these guys from small colleges in weak conferences, is that you really don't know what you have. Some have the ability to develop and some do not. Tripp was a standout star of Montana because of the high motor but he looked a bit light last year. Chris McCain also looked good for the brief opportunities he was given, but he too was a bit light and probably needs to put on about 15 lbs. He's an interesting development prospect at as an OLB.
Regardless, we still need a MIKE linebacker. I think that it becomes our most glaring need.

Thinking Taiwan Jones in rd. 5 if no Kendricks in rd. 2.

And SURE tacklers. That is one thing that stands out to me with Seattle's LB's and CB/Safety's is that they do not miss tackles.

I actually love the youth and upside of our LB corps. Wheeler/Ellerbe GONE... please make it so Hickey.

Draft a wrap up tacklling thumper who can lead the D in the middle (Denzel Perryman) and I'd be excited about seeing these guys flying all over the place. And FINALLY covering TE's down the field, which has been the D's downfall for like a decade...

Wheeler is gone.

The rest? Are they trash? or not in the right scheme / bad coaching.

Seriously the Dolphins are square pegs, round holes. Misi OLB in a 3-4, Ellerbee was rising star as 3-4 ILB, DJ 3-4 OLB. etc...

I'd dump Croyle first.......his schemes suck
