When the Dolphins traded away a seventh-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for defensive lineman Tony McDaniel, a trade general manager Jeff Ireland wanted to make, football czar Bill Parcells made Ireland promise he'd get that pick back somehow.

The Dolphins, happy with the 25th overall selection but wishing it was really in the 10-15 range, could be trade-down sellers in the coming draft in order to get to that magic 12 picks.

And what is the significance of 12?

That's the number of Dolphins unrestricted free agents that currently are scheduled to hit the open market in 2010. That list includes Chad Pennington, Will Allen, Anthony Fasano, David Martin, Matt Roth, Jason Ferguson, and Davone Bess.

I've read this 6 times already and still don't see the relevance of 12 picks versus 12 UFAs. Does Armando seriously think we will let all 12 of those guys go in place of the 12 players we would draft this year??

I would not be surprised if they trade out of the 1st round for additional picks, true that there are many FA for next year but remember it will depend on how they do this coming year if the Fins go out and resign them or not. A lot can happen bettwen now and this time next year.

Trading down for more picks wouldnt hurt us at all. We could get alot of first round talent in the 2nd round. The real talent is in the top 10 picks IMO. so giving up the 25th for multiple an additional pick in the 2nd and later rounds wouldnt hurt me at all. Just have to wait longer to see who we pick up.

wow that article is kinda scares me.....

to keep competing it seems we would have to sign all these guys back (Chad Pennington, Will Allen, Anthony Fasano, David Martin, Matt Roth, Jason Ferguson, and Davone Bess) with the exception of maybe Matt Roth

seriously, if we really wished our pick was in the 10-15 range, wouldn't we be more likely to trade UP? am i missing something? lol

Im not concerned about losing Big Ferg, Bess, Martin or Roth. I see Ferg replacement coming in the draft as well as Martin. Bess might get re-signed. But Roth numbers are replacable and I havent been thrilled at all with his contributions. Honestly I still wish we had kept David Bowens or better yet Patrick Surtain.

I would like to see this list of 2010 UFAs...because I don't think it's accurate.

none of these guys seem irreplaceable to me either. we'll know about Wake next off-season, so Roth might be out the door anyway. Martin is our #2 TE. he had a good year, but good TEs can be found quite easily. Camarillo signed a three-year deal, so even if it sucked to see Bess go, we could live without him. Ferguson is old anyway.

You don't see the difference?? The difference is roughly 30% of our salary cap. The difference between signing our picks vs signing proven vets will be termendous. Some of the vets you have to sign, but if you can replace talent with cheaper talent then you do it. Thats why we aren't over spending for some of the free agents. They have a plan and are sticking to it.

Well if the rumors are true about the uncapped year in 2010 Then as long as the new owner Ross has deep enough pockets, might be able to resign them all. Of coarse we have no idea at this point what the cap could be in 2011.

LOL one thing is for sure. Bess isn't going anywhere for a long time. Though if what we want does not last till #25 then a trade down is the best option. I'm not one to decide what would work for this team so I'll trust the judgement of the big 3.
