With all the coulda shoulda sign this guy and not this guy out there, I recently talked to a big guy Rams fan who said shelly was a steal and Miami is very lucky to have signed him considering he had multiple offers but he chose miami. He said he would do for our running game what "KY does for a... sex." His words not mine, lol! Then I watched this video, see how quick he got to the second gear, amaxing!
With the Rams, Smith displayed glimpses of dominance as a run blocker. He’s as athletic as they come, possessing the ability to effectively pull and block into the second level of defense. According to Pro Football Focus, Smith’s run blocking prowess was seen in his fourth overall run blocking grade among offensive guards last season.

I think everyone agrees that his run blocking is impressive, pass blocking is the concern.

when rantsports is being linked you know its a slow news days

4 times too...

It may be time to refill some prescriptions and catch up on some missed therapy visits for someone... :chuckle:

Not that there is anything wrong with that. :ponder: :D

I liked the signing, and hope that Benson can get him to be at least average in pass protect. He was leaps and bounds over any run blocker we had last year. I'm thinking that having a Manster to run behind on short yardage alone will be a big help.

I think the plan is for him to be one of the starting guards but i guess that depends on whom we draft (or sign)
Zack Martin who many are projecting to us at #19 is only 6'4" and may be better as a guard in the pros. At least that's what the scouts say.

Is he a likely starter or good depth at the Guard position?

I have to think a likely starter. We really need to be able to run some, and I believe that between Pouncey and Albert, he will be OK or better in pass protect.

I honestly know nothing about this guy, but I would love to hear from someone who actually watched him. I watched quite a few Rams games but never payed attention to this guy.

That's my assessment as well. While he has a ton of ability, his lack of length really precludes him from being elite at LT. He isn't quite strong enough to play RT at an elite level ... and his frame may or may not be able to support him getting that strength/bulk. He'd be a good OT on either side in our scheme once he adjusted, but just good, never great, IMHO. But, if you play him at LG, he becomes an absolute stud. I think he could become the next Logan Mankins, and if so, he is well worth the #19 overall pick. Rarely do OG's come along that really impress me. Sure, there are highly rated guys every year, but IMHO, Martin will be special at LG. There was a guy the Vikings drafted a long time ago (probably retired many years by now), who fit that mold. He went on to have an HoF type career. THAT'S how good I think Martin could be at LG.

Shelley has all the tools physically, but for whatever reason(s) he is simply atrocious at pass protection. Considering we finally have a young franchise QB, and we're a pass-first offense, and we have a head coach who is essentially a passing offense guy, and we added an excellent QB mentor as our new OC ... I just have a hard time seeing how we play one of the worst pass blocking pulling guards in the league as our starting RG. Develop him, sure. Bring him in on obvious running downs, absolutely. Use him as an extra OL in an elephant package, sounds great. Have him play fullback on short yardage and goal line plays, wonderful. But, to start in a pass-first offense after coming off a year where we had the worst pass protection in the NFL with the most sacks allowed (58!), and that got the OL coach, assistant OL coach, and 4 of the 5 starting linemen fired? Nah, I just don't see it. I'll definitely check his progress in preseason though, because he'll probably be getting a LOT of snaps when the 2nd team is on the field. Hopefully his pass protection improves ... dramatically.
