The Dolphins' 11-5 record last year never happened. The AFC East championship and playoff berth were figments of your imagination. It was all a dream. Time to wake up, Dolfans. Your team is still an also-ran. Not awful, but not a contender, either. Hard hats on, please. This remains a rebuilding zone.

The above interpretation of the Dolphins' 2009 reality cannot be reasonably denied because it is based on the club's recent actions and inactions.

You might otherwise have assumed last season's unexpected success put Miami firmly in a win-now mode, with ''rebuilding'' gone as an excuse or rationale, but it is getting harder to ignore the signs indicating Bill Parcells, Tony Sparano and crew are acutely aware their team is a long way from being finished.

yeah, we are in rebuilding mode..
but we had even less pieces last year and made the playoffs...
I dont think a hometown SB will happen, but i expect to make the playoffs again..
Fact is, Jason isn't that much more of an upgrade over Roth/Wake, he's got better moves and experience, but he's older, slower, and more injury prone.

We don't need taylor or boldin to make the playoffs, and even if we had both, we'd probably still all be afraid of Brady taking the division..

Not me, the pats will get injured again because of all the geezers on the team, and we will be one or two games ahead or behind the patsies...

no one expected 11-5 last year, nobody. This year I hope nobody expects the playoffs, and I certainly hope nobody expects a superbowl. Why? because you gotta take it one game at a time.

I think every team unless it is in "dynasty" mode is tearing down and rebuilding parts of the team every year. MOST of the Dolphin players who will be starting game 1 should be players that started the 2008 season. We replaced the center, but the rest of the O-line should be the same as started 2008. Wide receiver may end up being the 2008 crew unless a rook pushes out one of the '08 guys. RBs should be identical. I expect Penny to start game 1-same as '08. Defense is very similar. Holliday is gone, a few new faces enter the rotation (especially in secondary) but the core of the unit is little changed from '08. HOW CAN COTE SAY WE ARE IN REBUILD MODE? Rebuilding is what happened in '07 when there was a huge turnover. We are tweaking the '08 squad for '09. I believe the Trifecta wants to win now WITHOUT SACRIFICING quality down the road. Many on his board passionately argue Henne makes the best sense at QB from a football perspective. I don't think Taylor is worth the money he wants in order to play the role he would play on the Phins. The FO want to build quality teams via the draft (like NE) and not sacrifice picks in exchange for a veteran with an attitude. Teams that overpay aging veterans to "win it now" usually have it blow up in their face (including the Phins). I completely disagree with Mr. Cote.

He is just pissed off we didn't re-sign JT.

Doesnt mention whether they think JT is healthy or not. And he is unfairly comparing Langford and Merling to JT, I am guessing he doesnt realize that a 3-4 DE is different than a 4-3 DE.

He is bitter we didnt go out and sign a big name player like Boldin or Edwards.....

Frankly, it is that type of reporting and team bashing that gives Miami sports franchises a bad name.

Instead of trying to get people excited aobut the coming season, he already has us mailing it in.

Typical.

I'm curious if he even goes to the games. Wait, I'm sure he does, he is THAT guy. THAT jackass that sits in the crowd and doesnt make a noise.

He can become a Patriots fan if he doesnt like what we are doing to the team.

Have you ever given any thought to how childish this post sounds? Nobody is allowed to have any negative opinions of team moves and still be a fan of the team?

I'm not saying I'm agreeing with him on everything he says, but, he's certainly entitled to his opinion, and, can be a fan of the team, even if he's not a fan of every move.

Well I read the article as summary of the lack of action on the FA front. And his explanation of those players makes sense. Do I think MIA should have moved to get any of those players? NOPE.
Do I believe this team is built for a SB run or even a deep playoff push? NOPE.

I said it a few times and will continue to say it. This is year 2 in a 4 year plan.
I would be just as excited seeing a few pieces on O and D come on, in a 8-8 year. I would like to see MIA's future mold and get better game to game...whether its a loss or a win.

And to the poster who says there isn't much of a difference between JT and Wake/Roth, keep telling yourself that. Wake has proven nothing in the NFL, but being cut. If JT couldn't play anymore, NE wouldn't be bothering with him. Seau was done at one point in MIA also. He just happened to end up in NE and still ended up being quite productive.

I dont really get the negativity. We got to 11-5 with the exact same approach, which is passing on the big name UFAs, signing ascending players in their primes and drafting well. Why should it change now? It sounds to me like Cote forgets what happened during the Saban regime. The Nicktator traded away draft picks for "proven" veterans, he signed older players and he drafted poorly... Didnt work out so well. If the current strategy is considered "mailing in" the 2009 season, then sure, mail it in. I just dont agree with the negative spin.

What a **** article. Utter garbage. They don't want JT because he sucked last year and is old. He wants to be an "actor" now. Yeah..that sounds like a guy Parcells wants on his team. Ireland clearly said that JT could get in the way of the PT of the younger guys. Last time I checked, the younger guys that played last year took us to the playoffs.

We'll be lucky to win five games!

We are building with our draft picks. We actually are drafting guys who fit our scheme and are patient with them and they do as they are asked, not play with the media for the upper hand.

No more. Not in Parcells land. No way! We are building a team of 53 guys where 10-15 of them will play ST and be a part of something much bigger than themselves!

This is schlock reporting. Of course we're rebuilding --- everyone knows that. But we're ramping up faster than expected --- and with a few positive breaks this team can win as many games as last year. Yea, it's not going to be easy, but we've ALREADY turned the corner.

We're still one more solid draft away from completing the roster, and there are questions to be resolved (i.e., Henne is a big one and the development of young guys in general). But this team will be BETTER than last year and at the same time loaded with more youth and upside. So what's the freaken problem? This team is definitely on the assent!

:hump:

Were it not for J. Jones, the Cowboys would be one of the two or three best teams in the NFL. He built a great defense and great running game. But, J. Jones undermined Bill's plans by going after high-priced FA's, and everyone knows the rest. Parcells operates much like the Steelers or Pats (or the way the Pats did when they were winning SB's). They pick up key pieces through free agency - that don't break the bank - but do most of their work via the draft. They also work from the inside out.

I do think that they're slowly building, but good teams don't take short cuts. Will the Dolphins be the AFC's best team? No, probably not. But, they're building the right way, and they have a pretty decent shot at making the playoffs, and at that point, anything can happen.
