Friday's rookie minicamp was a chance to see the 6-foot-5, 304-pound Martin begin the adjustment.

Philbin's assessment of his second-round draft pick sounded promising after one practice. But he also hinted at the linemen needing to step it up in offseason conditioning.
"I like the way (Martin) looked like when he bent his knees, he bent his knees very well at the position," Philbin said. "I like the way he did that, I thought that his initial footwork was good. We really liked the way in his pass protection he used his hands when he was coming out in the draft. He's got very good length and he got very good timing on his punch."Martin started 37 of 39 games at Stanford at left tackle. Of course, the Dolphins already have one of the NFL's top left tackles in Jake Long. Martin has been very receptive to switching to the right side while learning from Long.
"You know it's a little strange," Martin said of playing right tackle. "You have to train different muscles but I'm getting it. Every set I feel better, so I feel like I'm ready to go."
Martin was asked what expectations he has of himself moving into the starting lineup?

Oh I guess Jake Long really is gonna stay at LT this year. Shocker.

What do you do with martin if murtha beats him for the starting job. Can martin play rg or can murtha play rg

I can't tell whether this is sarcasm, but I actually was curious to see what would happen, because Long is more of a road-grader you want at RT. But he is also a better LT than Martin, obviously, so I think it would not be wise to move him to RT.

Why don't the Basques have their own country? Why are they subjected to being sheepherders in windswept, wayward parts of Central Montana?

It's questions like these that don't let me sleep at night.

In what world is that a shocker?

And I refuse to believe Murtha deserves a shot to start over Jerry at any position until someone can show me some proof of him holding his own, or a solid analysis from ck

There's no way Jake Long was ever going to move. That's about as absurd as the infamous Zach Thomas to safety idea of decades past.

Jeff Ireland essentially squashed all rumor and speculation in his final post Draft press conference when he responded to a news article that suggested Martin could be here to take over at left tackle should they decide Jake Long is too expensive. Ireland said straight out, Jon Martin is here to play right tackle.

Whether Lydon Murtha beats Martin out for the start or not, I don't know. I doubt he will just because they both have similar strengths and weaknesses, and Jeff Ireland's teams under Sparano always had a lonstanding policy that if it's close, you go with the younger player. I don't know if Philbin will adopt the same rule or not. But it does lead me to believe that Martin will ultimately be the choice to start because I do think it will be close between he and Lydon Murtha.

I honestly hope that Jim Turner and Joe Philbin decide to try Murtha out at a guard position. He's tall for that position but I think it could be rewarding. I thought he was actually pretty powerful in his straight ahead power blocking, when I took a look at his starts in 2010. He has very good lower body explosion and mobility to get out to the second level, which is what this scheme NEEDS. They don't need pulling guards, as you keep hearing from Omar and some others, because pulling happens on maybe 1 in 5 run plays at most. But they do need guards that can get out to the second level on zone plays and either string linebackers out for the cutback, or execute backside cutoff blocks. I think Lydon Murtha can do that. I don't know that Richie Incognito can. I believe Artis Hicks can.

Keeping an eye on Josh Samuda. He could be the Donald Thomas of this draft, although hopefully he wouldn't plateau like Thomas did.

I cant believe people still take posts like that from me literally

I dunno man. In all my years here I have not seen anything close to that ridiculous. That thread set quite a high water mark for blatant stupidity.

CK...And what about Nate Garner. He looked promising before he got hurt. Do you see him challenging for any position? What would his value be? Is he strictly a back up?
What does he bring to the table.
