DAVIE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins lost defensive end Cam Wake, the four-time Pro-Bowl selection, to a season-ending torn Achilles tendon in Thursday's 36-7 loss at New England.
It's a devastating injury for the 33-year-old Wake and the Dolphins, for now and the future, because it might represent the end of Wake's seven-year run in Miami.
Everyone had a good idea about the grim reality of the situation. Wake appeared briefly in the post-game locker room on crutches.
"We'll get with the doctors and take it from there," he said in a sullen tone.
While Wake's loss will hurt greatly on the field, there's also a psychological toll to seeing perhaps your best player carted off the field.
"It's tough," quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. "You lose a Pro-Bowl player like that, a leader of this team, it's tough to see a guy go down."
Defensive end Derrick Shelby, who was already in the regular defensive line rotation, will likely start in Wake's place. And there's a chance Chris McCain, the linebacker who also plays defensive end, will get some playing time after being inactive the last two games. Look for second-year end Terrence Fede to also see his playing time increase.

If by chance this is the end of his career, then it's a shame he never got to experience the playoffs with us.

I don't believe it will be the end of his career, but he's likely not going to be the same player after this. He'll probably be signed somewhere and be a role player of some kind, but it will be a long road back for him.

He's under contract with us. No harm in seeing how he rehabs and restructuring him. Guys come back from Achilles now - heck, Suggs did it in the same season. When Marino or LT went down I think the procedure was not as advanced as it is now. Yes he's 33, but he can be playing next year for us. He's not going to get big money anywhere so why not stay home and be part of this thing - especially if DC is the coach.

Suggs was younger and plays a different position.

His game isn't based entirely on speed, and kicking off at the snap of the ball.

I'd like to see Wake return as a situational pass rusher which is basically what he was before.

I can also say, that they NEED to draft a big DE in the first 2 rounds this upcoming draft.

My biggest complaint about our off season was/is that we did not address pass rusher. We knew Wake was getting old, and we should have known that Vernon is average.

2016 will be a great draft for LB. I have doubts as to whether the pass rushers will be as good as the 2015 group.

I hope you are right about the draft class...we need to focus on LB, OLINE, and CB this next offseason and IMO not in that order. I would like to see the Oline fixed first, then CB, and then LB. We got to find a way to score more first and foremost IMO, and I am good with the skill positions as is for now on offense.

As painful as it is... We must learn to live life without Cam Wake..

never underestimate anyone... he proved them wrong before, he can do it again... I say Wake will be back on a 1yr injury deal (option for 2), better than ever... faith: most powerful force in the universe

This is a major part of the problem with this team. These positions were glaring holes that needed to be addressed after the end of last season, yet Tannenbaum and Hickey did NOTHING to actually upgrade any of those spots. The o-line was the biggest concern, but Philbin and the Front Office decided that they would go with what they had. However, since Philbin loves his short pass based offense, the personnel guys had no problem with getting more than enough WRs (and TE Cameron) for Joe, including using their 1st round pick on a WR with a bad foot. Then they use the 2nd round pick on Phillips and sign Suh, even though the d-line has the most depth on the team. So, Miami had Philbin, Lazor, and Coyle, all inexperienced and bad at their job running a weak and ineffective offense and defense matched up with a Front Office that refused to fill immediate needs.

Ross continually makes huge personnel mistakes. He fired Sparano, but kept Ireland. Then he fired Ireland and hired Hickey but kept Philbin, and then he brings in Tannenbaum as a VP with no control over the roster and the GM (yeah right)... all the while making sure that NO ONE would have the power to fire Philbin. Philbin was a bad choice, but Ross stubbornly refused to admit this. Hopefully Ross has learned his lesson and will clean house COMPLETELY at the end of this season, but he probably won't. In other words, this team isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so it doesn't matter if Wake is on the roster or not!
