How comfortable are you so far in Kevin Coyle’s defense?

JT:
The way the coaches help us out and the amount of time that we have, I’m beginning to feel more comfortable with each rep. And right now I’m starting to feel more comfortable and that’s allowing me to play faster.

This week you received a few reps with the first-team defense for the first time. What’s that like?

JT: It’s fantastic when you get to be with the guys who have done it and some guys who have been to the Pro Bowl, it helps you to play faster. I feel like I play faster out there with them, and it’s only going to make me better. I’m going to feel more comfortable when I get that opportunity in a game so I maximize it in a game.

How does your role change in base versus nickel defense?

JT: You’re expecting the pass more, but teams will scheme it to where they’ll run. It’s just one of those things where you find out where you fit in that scheme. The coaches have a number of different schemes, and it’s our job to run it how they teach us.

I have a good feeling about Tripp. Then again, I said that about Chris Hogan too.

Hogan is still in the league. Can not remember which team he is on. I thought that he could have developed into something, but the story of this team is that they let go of players that thrive elsewhere. At least it seems for the last 15yrs.

Not saying Tripp is the next Zack Thomas, but I like that he is really beginning to know his stuff. During the off-season he said he went home and studied his tail off. I think it is starting to pay off. The other day Chris McCain was saying on finsiders that along with our LB vets Tripp helps him a lot. I am with a lot of folks around here. If Wheeler isn't getting it done, let's give either Tripp or McCain a chance.

Edit: Just to add, I was listening to my I-pod this morning while exercising and McCain also said that Tripp is at the facility bright and early studying film, etc and that he (McCain) had to step his game up. Glad to see both Tripp working extra hard and McCain with enough sense to recognize a good thing when he sees it. :-)

The other great things that Tripp offers are LB position flexibility and he's good at Special Teams. He can play any of the 3 LB roles and he is learning the plays for all of them. Consider for a moment the additional challenge he has of learning the plays for all 3 positions compared to all other LBs on the team. He seems unfazed by the challenge. He's even getting practice as the backup long snapper to John Denney. I'm rooting for him to make it.

Now we have to see that gem and hold on to them. We need to get to the playoffs.
