Shelby is performing so well in camp, he went into last week's preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as Cameron Wake's primary backup. Once he was put in the game, Shelby racked up two tackles, one for a loss.
Shelby could be in line to start this week, if the team decides to rest Wake following his car accident earlier this week.

Shelby went to Utah as a defensive tackle, where he was thrust into the starting position as a true freshman. He only wighed 250-pounds at that point, and the doubts about his ability to perform were obvious.
"I'm pretty sure I was a surprise," Shelby explained about his freshman campaign. "Nobody thouht somebody 250 [pounds] could play defensive tackle. I think that helps me today, just being undersizes and things like that. I've already experienced that, and I know what leverage to take in order to beat the blocks off the bigger guys."
Utah would finish 13-0 that season. By his senior year, Shelby was an All-PAC12 defensive end, but, as he puts it, was never the guy on the Utes' roster. "I've never been a star in my life," Shelby said according to the Herald. "I've just been a guy who goes out and does is job, and that's fine with me."
Friday night against the Carolina Panthers, Shelby could take a big step toward securing his position on the 53-man roster. If he does get a chance to compete against the Panther's top offensive line, and he is able to hold his own, the Dolphins may have found the acorn for which general manager Jeff Ireland is always searching.
But, the fact that he could be the starter over third round pick Vernon should make Shelby feel a little more comfortable with his role on the team.
On his Twitter account, Shelby still has a picture of him with Utah. He describes himself as "Recent University of Utah Graduate," finishing his description with "Chasing the Dream!" When the Herald asked him about chasing the dream and what it will say if he makes the Dolphins roster, Shelby responded, "If I end up making the team it will be 'Dream Fulfilled." I've just go tto stay in that dream as long as I can."
If Shelby continues to play like he has been, he may be living that dream for a long, long time with the Dolphins.

He's one of those guys you notice on the field. Seems to have a strong motor. Him and Trusnik stood out big time against Tampa Bay.

We need to compliment Wake desperately. Wake has been invisible so far. I hope he can produce.

Definitely. It seems after that surprise first season all of the coaches caught on to his moves and somehow learned to stop him. He needs to either bring something new or dig deeper. They have him figured out.

Shelby or Vernon will have to step up if it continues.

You can't be serious? You think Wake was STOPPED last season?

He'll get plenty of playing time this week. Wake ,Dansby and Burnett are injued. Either him of Vernon should start opposite Oldrick with the other getting lots of playng time on 3rd down passrushing plays
i want to see Trusnik play more. He had a nice game agianst TB, Recovered a fumble also.
Not a starter but could be a solid reserve.

When he comes into the NFL, looks almost unguardable and then next season he looks like just an average pass rusher than yeah.... Someone learned how to guard him. That or he just didn't play hard enough. Either or is not good.

He needs to fix that this year or we will be looking else where for some pass rush. I'm already not happy with how he looked so far, but i'm hoping he turns it on.

Also, those stats don't have 'hurries' but I guarantee you it wasn't even close to his 2010 season.

"Dolphins RE Cameron Wake drew 13 offensive holding calls last
season, the most in all of football by a wide margin.

Nobody else in the league drew more than seven. [...]"

No need to find a replacement at this point IMO.

I agree 100%, not right now, but if his numbers continue to drop i'd say we would be eyeing other pass rushers for the future.

I like Wake just as much as anybody here. Obviously something happened, either he slowed down or people figured him out. He's definitely not a huge threat to the QB like he was in 2010. Still good but not a beast.

i'm sorry but this is crazy talk...they just showed how much they value wake with a massive contract extension and you think that they have to start considering replacing him off of his play in 2011...wow

Bro, he was held almost twice as much as any other player in the league last year. What are you going on about?

What i'm saying is maybe he wasn't as great as we thought he was. He came on the scene and was killing EVERY right tackle out there those first 2 years. Now not so much. This year will tell us where he is at. Maybe he was affected by the lock out. Maybe they figured out how to somewhat neutralize him. I know that this year he's back in his comfortable position playing DE in a 4-3, so we'll see if he's still playing at that high level. We do have to remember he's not a young guy. He's already on the wrong side of 30. I know that's not that old, but it's not young. If his numbers continue to drop off I think it's a no-brainer to start looking at pass rushers in the up coming draft. We had 0 pass rush by him and pretty much the whole D-line in the first preseason game(yes I know it's just preseason but still evidence). This years camp reports about him haven't been all that stellar either and he's going up against a rookie.

Not saying panic. I'm just saying IF his numbers continue to go down then look for the future. Also about that new contract, that money is for someone that's getting 11-17 sacks a season not 8 or less just saying...

wakes one of the top level pure pass rushers in the league...gets held more than double just about anyone else every year also...
