Miami Dolphins Rookie Spotlight: Derrick Shelby

Wake's production fell off last year for a variety of reasons.

1. Nolan didn't use him as a pass rusher as much early in the season. There were SEVERAL instances where Nolan had Wake drop into coverage on 3rd down (remember Wake trying to cover Santonio Holmes?)

2. Until Odrick came on later in the year, we had NO pass rush outside of Wake. When Wake actually did rush the passer, he was double teamed and held and nobody else was able to get any pressure. Once Odrick started to get pressure, Wake started to come to life.

3. I think he suffered a bit from the lockout.

wakes sack production from an actual stand point fell off cause he had hot garbage across from him at olb on 3rd down pass rush wise...no one could do anything...so naturally the opposition rolls its protection to cam wakes side...

gonna see a lot of that this year also if someone doesn't step the hell up and take some heat off the guy...

What's top level? Top 5? Top 10? Top 15?

That contract is for a top 10 pass rusher. I think him being top 10 last year is very questionable. The only stat you have going for you to make that argument is the holds. Nothing else. He was ranked 26th in sacks last year. That's very average.

I'll take that argument. You definitely have a point with how Nolan was using him in coverage. I was pretty livid about that one Holmes play in particular.

cam wakes a top 10 pure pass rusher in this league all day every day...

If last year was a wash like you guys are saying and he comes out strong this year then you're 100% right, but if he looks the same as last season this year then obviously he's not top 10.

obviously to you i guess...

Our pass rusher isn't gonna look that good when QBs have open receivers all over the field to throw to. Our secondary blows.

 Idk man I like to look at all the stats as a whole. If you look at only one stat than you can get a different opinion. Like if you only look at the holding penalty stats than he was the best pass pusher in the NFL last year. If you only look at the sacks stat than he wasn't even top 25. Get me?

if you practiced what you're preaching in this post then you'd realize that cam wake is absolutely a top level pass rusher in this league...if you actually looked at a total body of work

He was top level in 2010 but not in 2011. He had 1 great season, 1 good season and one average so far.

yeah we're getting nowhere...sacks pressures hold calls against and most importantly eye ball test...cam wake passes them all for me...average my ass...on to other things

He was top level in 2010 but not in 2011. He had 1 great season, 1 good season and one average so far.

PFF rated Wake the 9th overall pass rusher. He had 81 QB disruptions - 2nd only to Cris Long's 83. I believe the PFF rating is based solely on QB disruptions per pass rush attempt. That would not include forced holding calls. So if those were factored in, he'd be rated higher. So yeah, he's a top 10 pass rusher. Obviously.

To each their own. Holding penalties set an offense back even more than a sack. He had way more holding calls than anyone else. That more than makes up for his sack count in 2011, and his pressures/hits were not really down.

I think objectively speaking, no he didn't have a down year.
