When Durham Smythe was told veteran tight end MarQueis Gray was going to be out for the season with an Achilles injury, he felt terrible.

Then he heard the next message loud and clear.

“They said everyone was going to have to step up,” Smythe, the rookie from Notre Dame, said Thursday. “I took that as it was implied that the role was always important, but now it’s time to accelerate things a little bit.”

I really wanted Miami to draft two TEs as filling the positions with castoffs has not benefitted the team at all. I like the combination of players they grabbed. IF Smythe can develop into a Fasano/Sims type of TE then he will end up being an excellent piece on the team.

I liked Smythe on the draft and I'm rooting for him. I think he can be a very good player for us.

Seems like he takes his job seriously and will give maximum effort so i think he'll be fine minus a few obvious rooie moments. I'm definitely pulling for the dude.

He has shown that potentially, he could be a very good blocker from the TE position, and as he did at ND in the few opportunities he got, he also has shown to have good hands to catch the ball, but the one thing that few expected of him...at least not so quickly, he seems to run pretty effective routes.

Here's to him and Gesicki becoming a serious problem for opponants.

So if you believe the depth chart (not sure I do) Gase put together the starting TE's were going to be Gray (inline) and Derby (split out). Now that Gray is gone, does Derby move into the inline position or does that fall to Smythe?

So you like what you've seen from him? Just wondering.

Not him, but yes. He's very polished already in a lot of respects, has soft hands, is a competent route runner, and hits his assignments.

Go back to the 2016 Dolphins and see how effective Dion Sims was. He wasn't a high volume target, and he's always had suspect hands, but he was still very, very efficient when we did target him. Adam Gase runs a very multiple offensive that puts a lot of stress on opposing defenses when he's not looking at 2nd and 15 due to a dumb penalty.

Smythe is sneakily going to be one of the best acquisitions this team has made in years. When you draft a Notre Dame tight end and he stays healthy, you strike gold.

Bingo. Nd tight ends are developed like a 6th OL. Very athletic. And when they aren't in line blocking they are used to block for WRs on bubbles and flash screens. Usually high upside guys

I think Smythe is going to be real pro...with a long career...nice complement to Gesicki.

I am very optimistic about our Dolphins future overall.
